WSU Women Go 2-0, Denver Sweeps Air Force In Double Dual

DENVER (October 19, 2024) – Washington State Women’s Swimming capped off their Colorado road trip with a pair of wins over Denver and Air Force at the University of Denver Saturday.

The Cougars improved to 4-0 in dual meets this season after beating Northern Colorado last Friday, claiming a road win at Colorado State before besting both teams Saturday for the first 4-0 start since 2010-11. WSU won 12 events including both the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay before five different Cougs recorded wins led by juniors Dori Hathazi and Emily Lundgren who each won three events while senior Emma Wright won both the 50 free and 100 free.

WSU opened the day with a win in the 200 medley relay by Anna Rauchholz, Lundgren, Skylar Brgoch and Wright before Lauren Wille and Tatum Janning finished second and third, respectively in the 1000 free. Hathazi followed with her 200 free win with senior Angela Di Palo just behind her in second place and Rauchholz added a win in the 100 back.

Lundgren picked up her win of the day in the 100 breast, Hathazi and senior Samantha Krew went 1-2 in the 200 fly, Wright and freshman Darcy Revitt went 1-2 in back-to-back races of the 50 free and 100 free while Di Palo gave WSU the top three finishers in the 100 free.

Freshman Wiktoria Palicka picked up her first career win, taking the 200 back just ahead of sophomore Ariel Wang and Rauchholz who finished 1-2-3 in the event. Lundgren added her 200 breast win, Hathazi took the 100 fly and Lundgren capped her day with a win in the 200 IM, just ahead of Wang who placed second.

Washington State closed the meet with a win in 400 free relay by nearly four seconds from the team of Hathazi, freshman Issabelle Parrish, Revitt and Wright.
The Cougars return to competition hosting Seattle U Friday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m.

DENVER  – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs got a sweep over Air Force and the Pioneer women fell to Washington State in the second half of their double dual on Saturday afternoon inside El Pomar Natatorium.

Event-by-Event Recap
Denver’s women opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The men won the relay race when the quartet of Quinn CollinsNico MortonHamish McLellan and Luke Milburn combined for a time of 1:31.94.

The Pioneer women got their first win in the women’s 1000 free. Nika Spehar earned the distance-free win with a 10:32.71.

Denver’s men got three of the top four spots in its first distance free race. Joseph Hancock reached the wall first in 9:36.94. Finn Holdredge finished second in 9:41.35 and Joseph Purdy clocked in at 9:50.39 to take fourth.

The Pios took second and fourth in the women’s 100 back on Saturday afternoon. Lilly Zippel took second in 56.43 and Ali Beay grabbed fourth in 57.28.

DU’s men took second through fourth in the men’s race. Dylan Wright finished second in the 100 back with a 50.38, Collins took third in 51.04 and Liam Simmons reached the wall fourth in 51.50.

Jessica Maeda highlighted the Pioneers performances in the 100 breast with her time of 1:03.86 to finish second.

Brandon Chapman got Denver back in the win column in the men’s 200 fly. Chapman clocked in at 1:51.20 and Ian O’Neil finished fourth in 1:55.66.

Megan Lucyshyn earned a podium spot in the women’s 50 free, finishing the sprint in 23.83. Izzy Burton finished fifth in 24.10.

In the men’s sprint, Denver grabbed four of the top five spots in the race. Milburn finished second in 20.86, Frank Tirone took third in 20.91, Nikola Tadic grabbed fourth in 21.37 and Matija Pantic reached the wall in 21.47.

Following a second place finish in the 100, Wright won the 200 back with a time of 1:49.65. Collins took second in 1:51.59, Simmons finished fourth in 1:53.84, Mason Bruhn grabbed fifth in 1:57.10 and Max Roslin reached the wall sixth in 1:57.25.

Peyton Mullowney and Maeda earned a third-fourth finish in 2:19.45 and 2:19.62, respectively.

Daniela Alfaro got the Denver women back in the win column, leading a trio of Pioneers in the top four with a 5:05.94. Sabrina Rachjaibun finished second in 5:06.06 and Spehar earned points in fourth with a 5:09.86.

Denver’s men swept spots 2-6 in the second distance race of the afternoon. The group was led by Hancock’s 4:42.25. Kieran Watson finished third in 4:42.51, Dylan Mes took fourth in 4:45.47, Connor Hughes finished fifth in 4:46.12 and Holdredge rounded out the group with a 4:46.14.

McLellan paired with Chapman for a 1-2 to get the Denver men another event victory. He finished with a 49.74 and Chapman clocked in at 49.99.

In the final individual event of the meet, Zippel finished third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.73. Maeda took fourth in 2:08.15 and Rachjaibun finished fifth in 2:09.99.

Marco Nosack led a trio of Pioneers that finished 2-4 in the men’s 200IM. Nosack clocked in at 1:52.91, Morton finished third in 1:54.99 and Bruhn took fourth in 1:56.97.

Denver’s men’s and women’s 400 free relays both finished second to finish the swimming portion of the meet.

The meet closed out with diving on Saturday afternoon. Kaitlin Calvery won the women’s one-meter dive with a score of 282.38. Savanna Berry finished third with a 261.83.

On the men’s first board of the night, Denver swept the podium places. Zyad Morsy led a Denver trio with a 354.30. Nathan Cox earned a 336.08 and Colin Breuer scored a 326.85.

Calvery made it a clean sweep of the two boards with her score of 310.95 in the three-meter dive. Morsy also completed his sweep with a 371.93 on the one-meter. Cox earned a 311.85 to take second in the final event of the night.

Denver’s men’s and women’s programs will have split schedules in two weeks inside El Pomar Natatorium. The Denver women will open the weekend against Colorado State on Friday (Nov. 1) at 12 p.m. MT (11:30 a.m. Dive/2 p.m. Swim) before the Pioneer men host Colorado Mesa on Saturday (Nov. 2) at 12 p.m. MT (12 p.m. Dive/2 p.m. Swim).

DENVER – The Air Force women’s swim and dive team finished third behind Mountain West foe Washington State (190.00-104.00), and Denver (186.50-113.50), Saturday afternoon, at El Pomar Natatorium in Denver.

“We started out slow today and got better and better as the meet went on,” head swimming coach Colleen Murphy said. “In the second half of this meet, our team started doing season best times and racing much better.”

Four Falcons battled to runner-up finishes across four events. Maeve Linscott clocked 2:19.08 to finish second in the 200 breaststroke— she also finished third in the 100 breaststroke, just ahead of teammate Naomi Furman. Linscott, alongside Kai-Min TsueiAmber Martin, and team captain Abby Turner claimed third in the 200 medley relay.

Senior Alex Clark swam to a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (56.55), finishing just ahead of teammate Amber Martin (57.52). Jena Nowoswiat and Abigail Hardy finished third and fourth place, respectively, in the 200 fly. The 400 free relay team comprised of Lily LarsonAlex ClarkRyan Mills, and Abby Turner claimed third (3:23.71).

The divers had strong performances behind Mountain West Diver of the Week Chloe Perkins and Kacey Hu who finished second on the 1-meter and 3-meter dive, respectively. Air Force had a strong showing on the 3-meter dive with Perkins, Kadyn Macpherson, Annaliese CundiffKacey Hu placing second through fifth, respectively.

“We have two weeks of great training before we head to Wyoming,” Murphy continued. “We will work on getting out faster, speed, and doing the little things right.”

Next up, Air Force men’s and women’s swimming and diving will travel to Laramie to take on Wyoming in dual meet action on Saturday, November 2. Action at Laramie High School is slated for 3 p.m. MT.

DENVER – The Air Force men’s swimming and diving team came up short in El Pomar Natatorium, finishing behind Denver, 155.00-145.00. Eight Falcons battled to first-place finishes at the meet.

The Falcons were dominant in the 100 breaststroke race, winning first place through fifth place behind Bridon Rosales’ victory (55.51). Teammates Tanner WilsonMack NuvalTommy Nagle, and Anthony Sebastian finished second through fourth, respectively.

Air Force team captain James Winterfield led the charge with three first place finishes, claiming the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle, and a stake in the 400 free relay win with Chase DwornickiGavin Peterman, and Jacob Bulseco. The Falcons’ Daniel Detjen, Joe ChristKai Tiede, and Gavin Dustin swam to third in the 400 free relay race.

Christ, Dwornicki, Sebastian, Witte, and Camden Swigart claimed the top spot in their respective races. Christ swam to the first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:41.92), just ahead of Swigart’s second place finish (1:42.02). Swigart raced to first place in the 200 IM (1:52.24). Dwornicki raced to a first-place finish in the 50 free (20.77) after finishing second in the 100 free (45.98). Anthony Sebastian won the 200 breaststroke (2:03.14) just ahead of freshman teammate Tanner Wilson (2:03.36). Witte won first place in the 500 free (4:49.79), and took third in the 200 fly and 1000 freestyle.

Air Force’s top diver Alex Kenyon secured third place on the 3-meter dive with a 284.70.

Coming up, Air Force men’s and women’s swimming and diving will travel to Laramie to take on Wyoming in dual meet action on Saturday, November 2. Action at Laramie High School is slated for 3 p.m. MT.
