2025 NDHSAA State Boys Meet
- March 7-8, 2025
- West Fargo, N.D.
- SCY (25 yards)
- Results: Individual; Team
Right now, it’s hard to tell if the present or future is brighter for the West Fargo High School boys swim program in North Dakota.
West Fargo did something it hadn’t done before in program history at Saturday’s North Dakota High School Athletic Association, repeating as state champions.
Not only did the Panthers repeat, they dominated by winning 10 of 12 events and setting six state records to earn a meet-best 357 points.
Century was second with 245 points.
Even better is that the future outlook is even rosier for West Fargo.
In the seven individual events won by West Fargo, all were won by non-seniors, including two by eighth grader Logan Engelstad.
Engelstad won the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.73 and the 100 backstroke in a state record time of 50.08, breaking his own record of 50.15.
Engelstad’s older brother, junior and Indiana commit Brody Engelstad, won the 200 free in a state-record time of 1:39.36, besting the old mark of 1:40.66. Brody then won the 100 free in a time of 44.75.
His title in the 100 meters was his third straight title in that event.
Sophomore Isaiah Ayers also won two events, first taking the 100 butterfly in a state-record time of 48.39, breaking his own record of 48.70.
Ayers later won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 56.25.
The other individual for West Fargo to win was sophomore diver Griffin McAlister, who won that event with 435.30. McAlister improved on a fifth-place finish last year.
The swimmers not from West Fargo to win were Bismarck senior Blake Nelson and Legacy senior Ben Nasset.
Nelson won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:54.61, while Nasset won the 500 free in a time of 4:44.33, improving from the 4:51.80 he clocked at last year’s meet.
West Fargo swept all three relays, breaking state records in each event.
First, Isaac Elhard, Jonah Ayers, Isaiah Ayers and Logan Engelstad teamed to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:33.82, breaking the old state record of 1:35.26.
In the 200 free relay, Brody Engelstad, Jonah Ayers, Elhard and Noah Ayers also broke a state record, coming in with a time of 1:25.27. The old record was 1:25.27 set in 2022.
Brody Engelstad, Logan Engelstad, Noah Ayers and Isaiah Ayers then combined to produce a state-record time of 3:04.84 in the 400 freestyle relay, shattering the previous record of 3:09.31 set in 2022.
