Kierra Smith proved last night that she has 100 speed as well as 200 speed en route to a victory in the 100m breaststroke and punching in her ticket to the 2016 Olympic Games.
Smith was a 1:06.93 last night to win the 100, and after a 2:19.47 performance in the 200m IM this morning she’s ready to rock in the 200 tomorrow. Smith is eyeing a 2:22 in the 200m breaststroke.
Smith’s best time currently sits at a 2:22.82 from last summer’s World Championships in Kazan, Russia. Her time ranks her the third fastest Canadian all time in the event, and makes her the fastest Canadian ever without a tech-suit. Both Martha McCabe and Annamay Pierse were faster than Smith with their 2009 times.
So far Smith has already been a 2:24.36 this season at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Minneapolis which is faster than the 2:25.69 she put up in the prelims at last year’s World Championships and Pan American Games Trials. The time is also faster than the 2:24.38 she swam to win gold at the Pan American Games.
Smith has shown that she’s faster than last season so a 2:22 is in the cards.
