While many of Brazil’s top clubs have dropped their veterans in favor of trying to identify new, talented young swimmers worthy of precious salaries, the veterans keep getting it done in the men’s sprint freestyles.
Swimming on Saturday at the 2017 Maria Lenk Trophy, Brazil’s National Championship meet and final in a run of selection meets for the World Championships, Bruno Fratus won in 21.70, while Cesar Cielo took 2nd in 21.87.
With that swim, Cielo, specifically, has now gone under 22 seconds in the 50 meter freestyle for 11 consecutive years – a record that nobody else in the history of the sport can even get close to.
Below, watch the final of the race. Click here for full results from the 50 free final.
Cielo’s underwaters off the start looked like he was carrying a piano on his back. If he cleans that up watch out.
Cielo went 21,79 on Final
