WADA Publishes First Ever “Athlete Reference Guide to the Code”

In a project led by the WADA Athlete Committee, tasked with representing the views and rights of athletes worldwide, the World Anti-Doping Association has published its first ever “Athlete Reference Guide to the Code.”

While the World Anti-Doping Code is still a legal document and is still valid in every way, the hope is that this athlete’s reference guide will help athletes better understand the most crucial parts of the code.

According to a press release:

The guide provides an explanation of athletes’ roles and responsibilities, details of what constitutes an anti-doping rule violation, information on the Prohibited List and supplements, and details on matters ranging from the ‘Whereabouts’ rule to Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs), amongst other topics.

“Many of the more technical aspects of the Code can be difficult to understand and, whilst the Code itself is still the legal document that athletes are held accountable to, this reference guide will help individuals better understand many crucial areas of anti-doping, from supplements to doping control, and the prohibited list to new terms such as ‘prohibited association’,” WADA president Craig Reedy said of the project.

WADA Athlete Committee Chair Beckie Scott added: ““Anti-doping can be a taxing matter for many of us, and what this guide does is help shed light on some of the more tricky subjects within anti-doping. Through its improved rules, the revised Code is going to offer a real boost to the clean sport movement when it arrives in just over three months’ time. I am delighted that we now have this athlete guide to accompany the Code, and I look forward to helping promote its use in the months and years ahead,” she added.”

Among the swimmers on the WADA Athlete Committee are Olympic gold medalist Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, three-time Australian Olympian Matt Dunn.
