12-year old Vinny Marciano has broken his 2nd National Age Group Record in as many days this week in Clearwater, Florida at the NASA Showcase Classic.
During Thursday’s finals session, Marciano was a 24.32 in the 50 yard backstroke. That broke the old record of 24.56 that he and fellow New Jerseyan Destin Lasco both swam on the same day about a month ago. Lasco now holds three of the five fastest 50 yard backstrokes in age group history.
Placing 2nd in that race was Carson Foster of the Cincinnati Marlins in 25.54. Foster is best known for breaking Michael Phelps’ 100 yard fly record as a 10 & under, but as an 11-12 his backstroke and breaststroke times have really been better. This swim, which was a best for Foster by a full second, jumped him from 74 on the all-time age group list all the way up to 7th.
On Wednesday, Marciano broke the National Age Group Record in the 50 free. His sprinting has looked very, very good at this meet, as did his 500 free where he dropped a second-and-a-half and his 200 IM where he dropped two. His only stumble was the 200 back, where he missed his best but still easily won his age group by 5 seconds.
Wow! Congrats!
