Villanova Women Down Rutgers, Seton Hall, Georgetown

A quad meet this weekend saw Villanova take down Rutgers, Seton Hall and Georgetown on the women’s side. They defeated Rutgers 198-153, Seton Hall 261-86, and Georgetown 264-83. The Rutgers women defeated Seton Hall 274-79 and Georgetown 256-97. Georgetown women took down Seton Hall 200-151. On the men’s side, Seton Hall beat out Georgetown 224-129 and Villanova 266-85. Georgetown beat Villanova 257-96.

Piscataway, N.J.– After holding a slim 13 point lead on Rutgers after day one of competition Friday, the Villanova women’s swimming team (5-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) had a strong performance defeating the Scarlet Knights Saturday 198-153.

The Wildcats also beat Georgetown, 264-83, and Seton Hall, 261-86.

The women picked up six-first place victories, five-second place victories, and six-third place victories Saturday. They also swept three events.

The Wildcats got off to a good start Saturday as Darby Goodwin, Elise Pidutti, Fiona Hardie, and Kaisla Kollanus took second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.43. They finished 25 hundredths of a second behind first place Rutgers.

The ‘Nova “B” team of Gabby Daigneault, Kristin Haufler, Alexa Fabbri, and Taylor Wilson took third place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.50.

The Wildcat women would take first and second place in the 400 IM as Daigneault and Caitlin Daday went 1-2 for Villanova. Daigneault finished with a time of 4:29.18, while Daday finished just 20 hundredths of a second behind her teammate at 4:29.38.

The ‘Cats would sweep the 100 free as Kollanus (51.24), Jessie Randolph, and Fabbri went first through third.

Goodwin would pick up her fifth individual victory of the year in the 200 back as she upset Rutgers’ Joanna Wu 2:01.27 to 2:01.79. Wu was an NCAA All-American last year in that event. Daigneault would place third with a 2:04.84 showing.

Villanova would sweep the 100 fly as Hardie (56.70), Goodwin (56.74), and Fabbri (57.48) went first through third. They would also sweep the 500 free as Emily Mayo (4:57.65), Cailtin Daday (5:03.08), andMary Snyder (5:03.86) took home first through third place.

The Wildcats would close out the day by taking first and second in the 400 yard free relay. Fabbri, Randolph, Taylor Wilson, and Kollanus took home first place with a time of 3:27.06.

The Nova “B” team of Hardie, Samantha Cheruk, Elise Pidutti, and Goodwin finished first third with a 3:31.34 showing.

The women will return to action next Saturday, November 14 at noon as they travel down the road to UPenn to take on the Quakers. This meet was originally scheduled to be at Villanova, but due to the ongoing construction project and other campus events the meet had to be relocated to Penn.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 7, 2015) – The Rutgers swimming and diving team finished its two-day quad meet against Georgetown, Seton Hall and Villanova Saturday morning at the RU Aquatics Center. The Scarlet Knights captured convincing victories over the Pirates (274-79) and Hoyas (156-97), but lost to the Wildcats, 198-153.

“Today was a little more mixed, but we still had some impressive results,” said head coach Petra Martin. “For us, we now have to make sure that our second days can be just as strong as our first ones. A lot of them are trying to figure out what they need to do better, so we’re going to take this experience and bring it into the next couple of weeks.”

After breaking the program’s 3-meter dive record the night before, sophomore diver Addison Walkowiak (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) continued to shine off the boards during day two of action. Walkowiak secured the 1-meter dive title with a score of 303.25, just over three points shy of her personal best and program record 306.90 set last season.

Junior Alyssa Black (Middletown, N.Y.) also secured an impressive mark of 294.55 for second place, while freshman Rachel Byrne (Bedford, N.H.) finished third with a score of 245.05 to help the Scarlet Knights sweep the top three positons in the event.

In the pool, RU started off fast, securing a win in the 200 medley relay. Seniors Morgan Pfaff (Red Lion, Pa.) and Joanna Wu (Kent, Wash.) along with juniors Meghan Kiely (Mountain Lakes, N.J.)and Rachel Stoddard (Hillsborough, N.J.) hit the wall first with a time of 1:44.18 to secure top honors.

Rutgers also shed more than two seconds off its best time of the season in the 400 freestyle relay, as Wu, Kiely, senior Sarah Coyne (Osceola, Ind.) and freshman Cynthia Wu (Princeton, N.J.)produced a second-place mark of 3:28.08.

Individually, Stoddard finished first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:20.76, more than two seconds ahead of the next best time. In total, the Scarlet Knights secured three top-three finishes during the second leg of action.

Rutgers returns to the pool Friday, Nov. 20, when the Scarlet Knights host the Frank Elm Invitational at the RU Aquatics Center. The invite will also take place on Saturday, Nov. 21, and Sunday, Nov. 22.

Georgetown:

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Georgetown University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams concluded the two-day Rutgers Quad Meet at the Werblin Recreation Center with the host Scarlet Knights and BIG EAST opponents Seton Hall and Villanova on Saturday.

The men’s team defeated Villanova, 257-96, and fell to Seton Hall, 224-129. The women defeated the Pirates, 200-151, while falling to both Rutgers (256-97) and Villanova (264-83). For the Hoyas, the meet was their first taste of conference competition leading up to February’s BIG EAST Championships.

The Hoya men’s 200-yard medley relay team of senior Cal Rohde (Greenwich, Conn./The Peddie School), freshman Arthur Wang (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), junior Martin Vanin (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar) and junior William Leach (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) took second place, finishing one second behind Seton Hall, in 1:35.89 in the second event of the morning and 24th of the meet.

Sophomore Dan Ross (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) earned a second-place finish in the men’s 400-yard individual medley in 4:08.69, while Sam Delise (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) finished fourth in a time of 4:15.57.

Vanin finished second in the men’s 100-yard butterfly in a time of 51.39, while junior David Chung (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) was close behind in fourth-place in 51.83.

Senior Austin Evenson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) took second in the men’s 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.30, while junior Evan Grey (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) finished fourth in 4:47.60.

The men took second through fourth place in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Wang finishing seconds behind the leader in 2:10.09. Delise finished third in 2:11.21, while sophomore Matt Glockenmeier (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) was fourth in 2:11.69.

The quartet of Ross, Leach, Chung and freshman Jacob Kohlhoff (Tega Clay, N.C./Fort Mill) finished second for the Hoyas in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:10.80.

On the women’s side sophomore Bailey Page (Brentwood, Tenn./Ravenwood), earned a fourth-place finish in the women’s 100-yard freestyle, turning in a time of 52.93.

Junior Katie Duncalf (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) finished fifth in the women’s 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.98.

Senior Erica Fabbri (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) earned a fourth-place finish in the women’s 100-yard butterfly in 57.62.

In diving action, sophomore Ben Goodfriend (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) won the 3-meter competition with 263.50 points. Junior Jared Vespa-Cooper (Orange, Conn./The Hopkins School) finished second with 239.65.

Georgetown will wrap up its fall season when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for the three-day Bucknell Invitational, beginning on Friday, November 20.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s swimming & diving team closed out its fifth meet of the fall on Saturday at the RU Aquatics Center, delivering a number of strong performances against the host Scarlet Knights as well as BIG EAST foes Georgetown and Villanova.

Senior and two-time BIG EAST Most Outstanding Female Diver Gabby Signorelli (Massapequa, N.Y.) emerged as the class of the group of conference divers at the meet, surpassing all other league entrants in two events across two days of competition.

The Pirates, who already own four wins on the women’s side, fell to all three other squads on the team scoreboard but continued what has been a stellar fall in terms of individual performances.

FROM THE BOARD   

– Signorelli continued to excel against conference opposition, leading the group of BIG EAST divers in attendance from both one and three meters over the two-day competition. From three meters, the senior posted a score of 237.10 that was just shy of 30 points higher than the closest competitor from the league in Villanova’s Sara Jaklitsch (208.70)

– In one meter competition, Signorelli earned a six-dive score of 227.80, again over 20 points clear of the nearest BIG EAST challenger (Jaklitsch, 204.25)

PIRATE NOTABLES   

– Freshman Aitana Robinson (London, Ontario) and sophomore Kylene Ronayne (Springfield, Pa.) placed fourth and fifth respectively among BIG EAST entrants in the 200-back, logging times of 2:08.25 and 2:08.66

– Junior Tessa Lindner (Sun Prairie, Wis.) finished fifth in the 100-fly race with a time of 58.24 with teammate Sydney Simpson (Tallahassee, Fla.) just .03 seconds behind in sixth

– Simpson led the Pirates in the 200-breast with a fifth-place finish of her own; reaching the wall in 2:26.70 with teammate Megan Mallon (Glen Mills, Pa.) on her heels in sixth at 2:26.73

– Ronayne (4:41.45) headlined The Hall’s 400-IM efforts with a 10th-place showing while freshman Courtney McCardle (Hurley, N.Y.) turned in a team-best  100-free mark to claim eighth place

RELAY REPLAY   

– Robinson, Mallon, Lindner and McCardle ranked third among BIG EAST squads in the 200-medley relay with a 1:48.95 mark. The quartet previously combined to finish second among conference squads in the 400-medley relay on Friday

– In the 400-free relay, it was McCardle and Lindner once again joined Ronayne and Kat Carson (Katy, Texas) to rank among the top-five BIG EAST squads in a freestyle relay, turning in a time of 3:36.85 at 400 yards

NEXT UP   

The Pirates will close their fall slate over three consecutive days at the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason, beginning November 19.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – With eight more event victories on Saturday, the Seton Hall men’s swimming & diving team completed a perfect weekend in the pool, sweeping all 17 swimming events while cruising to convincing victories over BIG EAST rivals Georgetown and Villanova.

By virtue of the dominant showing, SHU out-scored Villanova, 266-85, over the two-day competition and downed the Hoyas by a final tally of 224-129. The Pirates now own a 6-2 record on the men’s side; an impressive ledger that includes a 3-1 mark against conference foes after The Hall sailed past Providence on the road last week.

Freshman Lior Grubert (Yehud-Monosson, Israel) and sophomore Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.)each returned on Saturday to add two more individual wins and swim on the two top relay teams of the day after helping the squad jump out to a significant advantage on day one.

For the second-consecutive day, all of Seton Hall’s event victories came courtesy of underclassmen as a youthful group continues to state its case as a bonafide contender to bring home The Hall’s first-ever team championship when the conference championship meet arrives in February.

 

WINNER’S CIRCLE   

– Grubert set the tone right out of the gates in individual competition, opening the day two program with a 400-IM time of 4:03.84 that was nearly five seconds clear of his closest competitor. Fellow newcomerIvan Michalovic (Glen Mills, Pa.) added a third-place time of 4:11.96.

– Grubert later came back to post a 4:39.75 mark to claim first in the 500-free by over six seconds while sophomore Cody Wimmer (Macungie, Pa.) almost completed a late charge to claim the runner-up spot but ultimately finished .24 seconds outside of second with a third-place time of 4:46.54

– Yanchulis paced the 100-free field by reaching the wall in 46.76, delivering the fastest split on both legs of the race. In the 200-breast, the sophomore shot out to an early lead and would not be overtaken, finishing off another win in 2:07.20.

– The most impressive showing for The Hall may have come in the 200-back where sophomore Zohar Suslovich (Holon, Israel)  led four Pirates in the top-five with a first-place time of 1:54.73. Michalovic clocked in at 1:56.28 to take second while Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Michael Mattera (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished fourth and fifth respectively

-Freshman David Rowe (Cherry Hill, N.J.), another one of the premier newcomers league-wide,

added to his collection of victories with a wire-to-wire win in the 100-fly, finishing with a final time

of 50.49.

 

RELAY REPLAY  

– Rowe and Grubert combined with Sean Sali (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Dakota Williams

(Noank, Conn.) to take the top spot in the 200-medley relay after accumulating a time of

1:34.84.

 

– In the 400-free relay, Grubert, Williams, Yanchulis and Chris Tucker (Middletown, N.J.)

completed the sweep with a collective time of 3:09.14. With Yanchulis waiting to take off on the

anchor leg, the squad was less than .5 secconds ahead of the eventual runners-up from

Georgetown and ended up winning by 1.66 seconds

FROM THE BOARD  

Over the two-day competition, Alex Pfisterer (Mohnton, Pa.) placed second from the one-meter

board with a score of 248.00, just ahead of Eric Davidson (Overland Park, Kan.) in third. From

three meters, Davidson ranked fourth with a score of 216.25 in front of Pfisterer in fifth.

The Pirates will close the fall at the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason with competition

to take place from November 19-21.
