Video: Team Serbia – Water Polo at its Finest

FINA has released the above video as a run-up to the water polo competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. “Team Serbia – Water Polo at its Finest” shows highlights from the men’s water polo final at 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia last summer, in which Serbia faced Croatia in the final. “The Dolphins” were down 0-2 early on before dominating the second half of the match and winning 11-4. Scoring for Serbia were: Andrija Prlainovic 3, Milos Cuk 2, Dusan Mandic, Dusko Pijetlovic, Milan Aleksic, Nikola Jaksic, Filip Filipovic, and Stefan Mitrovic. Pijetlovic was voted Tournament Most Valuable Player by media representatives, while Prlainovic earned MVP honors for the championship game.

The FINA video points out that Serbia is the “natural successor” of the former Yugoslavia, which had won 3 Olympic titles (1968, 1984, 1988) and three World Championships (1973, 1986, 1991). As Serbia-Montenegro, they won World Championship gold in 2005. And as Serbia, they were crowned World Champions in 2009 and 2015. Other accolades ascribed to the Serbian men’s team are FINA World Cup winners (2010 and 2014), FINA World League champions (2013-present), and European champions (2012, 2014, 2016).

Serbia is considered to be the favorite for the gold medal in Rio this summer.

Thats true about Hungary. However, Serbia has been the most consistent in terms of winning championships. Since 2013 they have won every available championship except the WCH in 2013. Thats 7 of 8 possible gold medals. Hungary has won 1 out of 8 in the same time span. Incidentally. it was the WCH in 2013. Since 200 Serbia has won 20G 4S 5B for a total of 29 medals. Hungary has won 7G 11S 6B for a total of 24 medals. Croatia won 4G 5S 5B for 14 Medals. Serbia has won 20 of a possible 38 gold medals, more than 50% Thats what I call total domination of the sport.
