USA Women Top Netherlands 10-8; Holiday Cup Set To Begin Tuesday

Huntington Beach, CA – December 14 – The USA Women’s Senior National Team is set to begin play in the Holiday Cup starting Tuesday at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA. The defending World Champions will host the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain in six days of competition. Team USA is coming off a 10-8 win over the Netherlands in an exhibition yesterday (see below for recap). Head Coach Adam Krikorian has announced the USA roster for the event with competing athletes changing for each match.
On Thursday evening, following the Holiday Cup competition the USA Men’s National Team will host Croatia at 8pm. On Fridayin between Holiday Cup competition, Corona del Mar HS and Newport Harbor HS will compete in girl’s water polo in the annual “Battle of the Bay” meeting.

RECAP – USA 10 – NETHERLANDS 8

Manhattan Beach, CA – December 13 – Besides a brief visit from a flock of seagulls to the middle of the pool at Mira Costa High School, not much has changed when the USA Women’s National Team and the Netherlands get together. The two high level teams played close once more with Team USA winning 10-8 in a rematch of the 2015 World Championship final. Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/NYAC) scored twice whileSami Hill (Santa Barbara, CA/UCLA/Santa Barbara) and Ashleigh Johnson (Miami, FL/Princeton/NYAC) teamed up to record three saves in net in the win. Team USA returns to action on Tuesday with the start of the Holiday Cup at Corona del Mar HS. Tickets and schedule are information are available by clicking here.

The United States started off strong going ahead 2-0 in the opening period behind goals from Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, CA/USC/Santa Barbara) and Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach HS/SET). The Netherlands responded with two straight goals to even the game with 4:56 to play. Maddie Musselman (Newport Beach, CA/Corona del Mar HS/CdM Aquatics) and Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, CA/UCLA/SOCAL) scored the next two goals for a 4-2 lead with 3:58 to play in the first half.

Team USA then went on to score three of the next four goals, the last from Kodi Hill (Santa Barbara, CA/UCLA/Santa Barbara 805) to take a 7-3 lead with 1:49 to go in the first half. The Netherlands rallied scoring four of the next five goals to pull within 8-7 with 5:44 to play in the fourth period. Steffens and Kiley Neushul (Goleta, CA/Stanford/Santa Barbara) stepped up, adding two goals in the final 4:22to secure the victory at 10-8.

Team USA went 3/9 on the power play and did not attempt a penalty while the Netherlands went 2/12 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty.
