USA Women Stop Canada 14-4 For Fourth Straight Win In Texas

Lewisville, TX – February 19 – The USA Women’s National Team continued their winning ways in Texas with a 14-4 win over Canada earlier tonight at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatics Center. Makenzie Fischer (Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach HS/SET) scored four goals while Ashleigh Johnson (Miami, FL/Princeton/NYAC) recorded 14 saves in the win. The United States pitched a shutout in the second half en route to the victory. Team USA returns to action on Saturday night against Australia at 7:20pm cst. In other action tonight it was China beating Brazil 11-6 and Australia topping Japan 26-4. In the first quarter Team USA scored twice in the opening 53 seconds on goals by Kiley Neushul (Goleta, CA/Stanford/Santa Barbara) and Rachel Fattal (Seal Beach, CA/UCLA/SOCAL). Canada’s Krystina Alogbo cut the lead to 2-1 at 5:54 but Makenzie Fischer answered with a pair of goals at 5:42 and 4:53 for a 4-1 lead. Shae Fournier netted Canada’s second goal at 4:34 and Monika Eggens followed with the visitor’s third at 3:10 to cut the lead to 4-3. Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA/Stanford/NYAC) got the US on the board again at 2:48 and Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, CA/USC/NYAC) finished the scoring for the quarter with a power play goal at 1:03 and a 6-3 lead.

The US scored three times in the first 2:16 of the second quarter for a 9-3 on power play goals from Makenzie Fischer and Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA/UCLA/NYAC) and an even strength goal from Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Beach, CA/USC/NYAC). Canada cut the lead to 9-4 on Alogbo’s second goal of the night at 4:22. Craig and Steffens added the third and fourth US power play goals of the quarter at :54 and :21 for an 11-4 halftime lead.

Scoring died down in the third as the ledger remained 11-4 until 1:56 left in the quarter when Craig scored her third of the night. Johnson had eight saves for the US in the quarter. Jessica Gaudreault stopped four shots for Canada. In the final quarter KK Clark (Menlo Park, CA/UCLA/NYAC) pushed the US lead to 13-4 31 seconds into the quarter with her first goal of night. Makenzie Fischer added her fourth of the night at 3:26 for a 14-4 lead.
