CHICAGO (Oct. 14, 2023) – The UIC men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs began their 2023-24 seasons Saturday afternoon at the Flames Natatorium, with the UIC women easily defeating Butler (169-86), while the Flames’ men’s team came up short against Ball State (187-113).

For both Cole (Tremewan) and Harrison (Nolan) to get their (NCAA) zone qualification scores on both boards in their first meet of the year is phenomenal.”
DIVING
Men’s
- The Flames had a strong showing on both the one- and three-meter boards against Ball State, taking four of the top five places, including the top three spots.
- Junior Cole Tremewan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) won the one-meter event with 333.08 points. He also finished second on the three-meter board with 344.45 points.
- Sophomore Harrison Nolan (Riverside, Ill./Kentucky) scored 361.13 points to win the three-meter event for the Flames. He also placed second on the one-meter board behind Tremewan with 329.10 points.
- Both Tremewan and Nolan posted qualifying marks for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships next March in Louisville.
- Senior Hunter Trautmann (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) registered a career-high score on the one-meter board with 260.40 points, good for fifth in the event.
Women’s
- Since Butler had no divers to compete, the UIC divers competed against one another in an exhibition format. Sophomore Kathryn Kleckza (Franklin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) posted a career-high total on the three-meter board (239.78).
SWIMMING
Women’s
- Sophomore Madison Hemlick (Bingham Farms, Mich./Birmingham Groves) had a big day, winning three freestyle events for the Flames — 100 yards (53.18), 200 yards (1:54.53) and 500 yards (5:12.07)
- Senior Taira Juronis (Palos Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) won the 200-meter breaststroke event in 2:24.75. She also swam a leg on UIC’s winning team alongside sophomore Bella Drake (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union), seniors Izabella Del Rosario (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) and Jessica Phillips (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing at 1:47.06.
- Drake later won the 100-yard backstroke in 58.65 seconds. Phillips also won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.31 seconds.
- Freshman Molly Kroeger (Easton, Md./Easton) and Sophie Stefanac (Fenton, Mich./ Fenton) each earned their first collegiate wins on Saturday. Kroeger won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:48.67. Stefanac then narrowly edged Drake to win the 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.20 (Drake finished in 2:09.46).
- Junior Kendra Preski (Springfield, Ill./Colorado State) earned a win in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:12.88.
Men’s
- Senior Liam Davis (Naperville, Ill./Plainfield North) earned the Flames’ first individual win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.57).
- Freshman James McCarthy (Minnetonka, Minn./DeLaSalle) collected his first collegiate win in the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:04.89 finish. He also narrowly placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.11.
- Junior Cory Michalek (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) was 0.49 seconds away from a victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.58 seconds.
- Seniors Rafe Dolan-Peterson (Austin, Minn./Green Bay), Ben Ramminger (Deforest, Wis. /Deforest Area) teamed with Davis and Michalek in the 200-yard medley relay, placing second in 1:34.53.
UP NEXT FOR THE FLAMES
The Flames travel to Terre Haute, Ind., next Friday, Oct. 20, to face off against Southern Indiana and Indiana State in a tri-meet at 4 p.m. (CT). The UIC women will compete against both schools while the Flames’ men’s team will only swim against Southern Indiana.
It will then be a quick turnaround for the UIC women, who return to Flames Natatorium the following afternoon (Oct. 21) for a 1 p.m. (CT) dual meet against fellow Missouri Valley Conference member Illinois State.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team had a strong start to their 2023-24 season, defeating Mid-American Conference rival UIC by a score of 187-113 Saturday afternoon at Flames Natatorium.
The Cardinals came away with 12 victories out of 16 events contested on the day, with senior Joey Garberick and fifth-year Owen Chaye leading the way with four victories apiece; two individual and two relay.
Both helped secure wins in the 200 medley relay (1:31.68) and the 400 free relay (3:05.87). Garberick also achieved individual wins in the 100 breaststroke (55.75) and the 200 breaststroke (2:04.28), while Chaye took first place in the 50 freestyle (21.09) and 100 freestyle (46.08).
Freshman Malcolm Slater was also a major asset for the Cardinals, coming away with a pair of victories in the 200 butterfly (1:52.57) and the 500 freestyle (4:41.78). He also had a strong second-place finish in the 400 IM (4:09.89).
Other individual wins for the Cardinals included Alexander Eddy in the 1000 freestyle (9:55.10), Ethan Pheifer in the 100 backstroke (51.68), Logan Ayres in the 200 backstroke (1:54.68) and Bryce Handshoe in the 100 butterfly (50.63).
Men’s swimming and diving team will be back in action next Saturday (Oct. 21) when they head to Purdue for the Indiana Intercollegiates, which will also serve as the season-opener for the women’s program..

CHICAGO – The Butler swim team competed against UIC in a dual meet over the weekend. The Flames posted 169 points while the Bulldogs came up with 86. Senior Emily Landwehr was tabbed “Swimmer of the Meet” for Butler. Landwehr had a great split in the Medley Relay, swam for BU in the 400 Free Relay and was a top competitor in the 50 and 100 Free.
“After a few days of tough training over fall break, I’m really pleased to see the effort and speed our team put into today’s meet,” assistant coach Hannah Cressman stated. “The team put up a good amount of season-best times and raced with a lot of mental toughness against the Flames today. I’m proud of their progression since our last meet and excited to see their hard work pay off with some fast times.”
Landwehr was the top BU sprinter on Saturday, taking second place in the 50 Free and fourth in the 100 Free. In the 50, Landwehr clocked in at 24.86 and teammate Lauren Bergman finished fourth with a time of 25.41. Landwehr’s season-best time of 54.63 in the 100 Free also doubled as a BIG EAST Qualifying Time.
Landwehr swam with Megan VanValkenburgh, Kate Schilling, and Alani Hightower-Bend to make up the BU A Relay Team in the 400 Free. They posted the team’s best time of the season (by over two seconds) by finishing at 3:40.40.
The 200 Medley A Relay featured Landwehr, Schilling, Hightower-Bend, and Olivia Stotts. The group finished second with a time of 1:49.47. Hightower-Bend posted a 27.89 split in the back, Landwehr went 30.31 in the breast, Schilling took the fly with a time of 26.17 and Stotts was the free swimmer with a 25.1 split.
Gianna Leffler, Olivia McKee and Sadie Brown also highlighted the event for the Bulldogs. Leffler had a great split in the B Relay of the 200 Medley while also competing for BU in the 100 and 200 Back. McKee joined Leffler in the 200 Back while also swimming the 500 Free. Brown was Butler’s event winner in the 400 IM. She touched the wall at 4:46.25 and teammate Caroline Zimner was right behind in second with a time of 4:47.11.
Leffler earned second place in the 100 Back with a BIG EAST Qualifying Time of 59.42. She set a second BIG EAST Qualifying Time in the 200 Back with a season-best time of 2:12.29. McKee was the lead BU swimmer in the 200 Back, taking third place with a time of 2:10.41.
McKee also placed third overall in the 1000 Free with a time of 11:17.83. Teammate Elizabeth Naylor was close behind in fourth place (11:20.88). The 500 Free featured Caroline Zimner posting a season-best time of 5:25.16.
Kate Schilling recorded the fastest time for the team this season in the 200 Free. Her BIG EAST Qualifying mark of 1:57.62 was good enough for third on Saturday. Schilling and Lauren Bergman also set conference qualifying times in the 100 Fly finishing second and third in the event with times of 59.39 and 1:00.21.
BU also got a lift from Ava McGonigle in the breast events. She finished fourth in the 200 Breast (2:33.35) and fifth in the 100 Breast (1:10.58) with a BIG EAST Qualifying Time.
Butler will be in action again this weekend when they compete at the Indiana Intercollegiates Meet. Purdue will host the action on Saturday with events starting at noon.
