SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s swim teams both defeated Cal Poly by a score of 154-140 on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Aquatic Center. The wins make the men’s dual meet record 2-0, and the women’s 1-1.
Head Coach Matt Macedo praised his teams’ performance. “We can always count on a tough Cal Poly meet and today was no exception as the meet came down to the last two events. Our women were lead by Emily Boggess and Zoe Cosgrove and the men were lead by Doug Nogueira. We had many additional individual wins and both the men and women won both relays which was crucial to secure the victories. We can now look to a tough conference opponent in UCSD before our fall focus meet at the end of November.”
Several Gauchos who have been on hot streaks continued their dominance, including two-time reigning Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Athlete of the Week, Nogueira, as well as Boggess, Cosgrove, and Emily Ward. Additionally, several other Gauchos had impressive performances, such as Jake Rollo and Maelynn Lawrence.
Both the men and women swam well in the relays, as the women won first and third in the 200 Medley Relay (1:44.97 and 1:46.83) and in the 400 Free Relay (3:27.62 and 3:30.33). The men won first and second place in the 200 Medley Relay (1:30.96 and 1:31.78), and first and third in the 400 Free Relay (3:01.91 and 3:06.96).
Nogueira had three individual first-place wins for the Gauchos, including the 100 Back (50.02), 200 Back (1:51.25) and 400 IM (4:00.30). He also swam backstroke for the 200 Medley Relay “A” team, ending up with a 22.94 split. Other men who finished in first place included Jake Rollo, who won the 1000 Free with a time of 9:35.47, and Dan Marella in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:04.46.
The Gauchos put their depth on display as Dominic Falcon, Kian Brouwer, Justin Nguyen, Marcello Quarante, Jolen Griffin, and Theo Andrews each picked up second-place individual wins. Oscar Jameson, Nick Allison, and Zach Shenkin also contributed with third-place finishes.
On the women’s side, Boggess dominated the individual freestyle races, winning three events including the 1000 Free (10:08.41), 500 Free (5:00.07), and 200 Free (1:51.63). The freshman Cosgrove also stood out, winning two individual races including the 100 Back (55.57) and 200 Back (2:01.44). Ward won first place in the 100 Free (52.78), and and Jacquelyn Harris also earned first-place in the 100 Fly (57.13).
Rounding out the strong showing for the women were Elena England, Maya Lee, Lucy Fellner, and Bryn McGowan who each picked up second-place wins, as well as Britney Straw and Dora Seggelke who added third place finishes.
The Gauchos have two weeks of rest from competition before returning to action in a home meet against UC San Diego on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Campus Pool.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Four Cal Poly men’s and women’s swimmers and divers collected wins in multiple events and a total of nine Mustangs won at least one event during the Cal Poly men’s and women’s swimming and diving dual meet against UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Anderson Aquatic Center.
On the men’s side, senior swimmer Paul Rogers won three events while freshman swimmer Garrison Price won two events as the Mustang men fell to the Gauchos 154-140. On the women’s side, senior swimmer Amelia Feick and sophomore diver Joelle Weltner each won two events as the Cal Poly women fell to UCSB 154-140.
Rogers career-day started when he won the 200-yard free with a time of 1:37.24. He later won the 100 free with a time of 44.55, a career-best time in the event for him at Cal Poly. He followed that up with a victory in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.06.
Price won his first career dual event at Cal Poly in the 200 fly with a time of 1:49.54. He later won the 100 fly with a time of 49.34.
Feick was able to first win the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.07. She then was victorious in the 200 breast with a time of 2:18.47.
Weltner began her day by winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 254.20. She followed that up with a win in the 3-meter dive with a score of 255.20.
Some other winners on the day for Cal Poly included freshman Noah Otsuka who won the men’s 100 breast with a time of 56.62, senior women’s swimmer Emily Peters who won the 50 free with a time of 24.18, freshman men’s diver Tyler Wesson who won the 3-meter dive with a score of 266.70, freshman men’s diver Max Powell who won the 1-meter dive with a score of 288.30, and senior women’s swimmer Ali Epple who won the 400 IM with a time of 4:30.60.
Up next for Cal Poly, the diving team will be in action Nov. 8-10 at the USC Diving Invitational while the swimmers will next compete Nov. 22-24 at the Pepperdine Winter Invitational.
