Day three of the 2023 America East Championships saw three-time defending women’s champs New Hampshire continue to lead the standings. Meanwhile, defending men’s champions UMBC will enter the final day of the meet in the lead by 55 points.
Bryant kicked off the day with a win in the women’s 400 IM, seeing Samantha Grenon take the race in 4:19.19. She dominated the event, as Vermont freshman Natalie Schlemmer came in second with a 4:23.79.
Binghamton’s Henry Shemet broke the America East conference record in the men’s 400 IM, winning the race decisively with a 3:52.33. Shemet swam a well-balanced race, splitting 51.96 on fly, 59.16 on back, 1:05.46 on breast, and 55.75 on free.
Vermont freshman Hally Laney took the women’s 100 fly in a photo finish with Bryant junior Julia Stenhard. Stenhard got out to the early lead, splitting 25.66 on the first 50 to Laney’s 25.93. Laney then came home faster, getting into the finish in a final time of 55.34, 0.01 seconds ahead of Stenhard (53.35).
Oliver Gassmann (UMBC) won the men’s 100 fly in 46.85, winning the race by well over a second.
After going 1-2 in the women’s 500 free on Thursday night, the Vermont duo of Jackie House and Ella Church took the top two spots in the women’s 200 free on Friday. House won the raAce in 1:49.08, beating Church by 0.80 seconds. They were the only swimmers in the event under 1:50.
Binghamton’s Liam Murphy used a great final 50 to win the men’s 200 free, clocking a 1:37.26.
New Hampshire’s Jamy Lum won the women’s 100 breast by a huge margin, swimming a 1:01.92. She was the only swimmer in the field under 1:03.
UMBC’s Daniel Nicusan cracked the conference record in the men’s 100 breast, winning the event in 53.98.
Bryant’s Reagan Lord won the women’s 100 back in 54.51, while teammate Griffin Lajoie won the men’s 100 back in 48.49.
Bryant’s Kyriana Chambo won women’s 1-meter diving with a final score of 254.25, leading a trio of Maine divers.
New Hampshire won the women’s 400 medley relay in 3:44.14. Shelby Kasse (56.68), Jamy Lum (1:01.56), Chiara Pradissitto (56.06), and Audrey Mahoney (49.94) combined to win the race. Vermont was right behind with a 3:44.76, but their splits are incomplete, so we can’t analyze the race.
UMBC won the men’s 400 medley relay, seeing JJ Chapman (50.00), Daniel Nicusan (53.72), Oliver Gassmann (46.06), and Niklas Weigelt (44.52) team up for a 3:14.30.
