The final opportunity for Belgian swimmers to qualify for this year’s European Short Course Championships is taking place this weekend, as the 2019 Belgian Open Short Course Championships get underway Saturday.

Swimmers will be vying for not only national titles but also a spot on the roster for Glasgow, provided they clock a time that meets or exceeds those dictated in the selection policy.

31-year-old Olympic silver medalist Pieter Timmers is set to contest the 50m free, 100m free, 200m free and 50m fly events, where he is ranked as the top seed in all but the fly.

Timmers will have 18-year-old Kenzo Simons of the Netherlands right on his heels, with the Dutchman also taking on the 50m and 100m free, as well as the 50m fly. Simons is also entered in the 100m IM and 50m back, with the teen owning the top seed in the latter.

Valentine Dumont, Kimberly Buys, Fanny Lecluyse and Louis Croenen are among the top competitors sprinkled across the 2-day affair.

Two years ago in Copenhagen, Belgium finished 16th overall in the European Short Course Championships medal table, with individual medals coming from Timmers’ silver in the 100m free and Lecluyse bronze in the 200m breast.
