3rd Seed Will Licon and 4th Seed Chase Kalisz No-Show 200 IM Prelims

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Third seed Will Licon of Longhorn and fourth seed Chase Kalisz of North Baltimore both no-showed the prelims of this morning’s 200 IM, after coming into the event with 1:58.43 and 1:58.73 seed times, respectively.

Licon is likely deciding to rest for tonight’s final of the 200 breast. 2016 Rio Olympic qualifier and this week’s 400 IM champion Kalisz is now finished swimming for the week. His sole event in Rio will be the 400 IM (no small accomplishment).

Barring some sort of big mistake, the two Olympic spots appear to be on lockdown between 22-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps and 11-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, a fact which likely contributed to Licon and Kalisz’s decision to no-show. The third seed on the psych sheet, Conor Dwyer, scratched before the beginning of the session, after coming in seeded with 1:57.41.

We have no confirmation on this, but, from our seats in the press area, Licon’s family appeared to be unaware of Licon’s decision to no-show. The group decked out in “Team Licon” t-shirts with the slogan “If there’s a Will, there’s a way,” stood up and left the arena when they saw that he was not behind the blocks.

Is that clip inside his nostrils?

Is there not a way for these swimmers to scratch before the event? I don’t like there being open
lanes in the seeded heats (or any heats really).

They just have to do it by the night before like Dwyer did. It’s really common courtesy to do so, especially in a circle seeded format. They probably DFS in the morning, I don’t think you can technically no-show at a championship meet unless you are ok with being DQ in the rest of your events.

i can’t help feeling Prenot and Licon will regret this… i thought Prenot screwed up scratching the 400 IM… i liked Licon to give Lochte his money’s worth.

with Cordes doing what he’s doing… one of Licon and Prenot (maybe both?) will be left out… ugh. i like both of those dudes alot.

hoping they both pull it off tonight, if only so someone can film a buddy cop style series of them at training camp.

Licon and prenot tie for second and then they tie in every swim off until Fina changes this stupid 2 swimmers only rule.

It’s almost like someone is paying off all the threats to Phelps/Lochte; Bentz and Seliskar better look out.
