As the SEC continues to unveil nominees for the prestigious McWhorter scholarship, a fifth swimming nominee was revealed today when Texas A&M announced their male and female candidates for the honor.
Every year, the SEC accepts one male and one female nominee from each of its 13 member institutions. Nominees receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship, and one male winner and one female winner from across the conference each receives a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship.
Texas A&M nominated senior swimmer Paul-Marc Schweitzer for the award, alongside senior tennis/soccer/basketball player Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar (who in and of herself is a great story, having played in the Division I NCAA tournament in three different sports).
Schweitzer is majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering, with minors in Economics and Mathematics. He has a 3.8 GPA in the classroom, and is a two-time CSCAA All-America honoree. Individually, he holds the Texas A&M school record in the 200 free.
He joins Georgia’s Andrew Gemmell, Georgia’s Shannon Vreeland, Arkansas’ Julia Kucherich, and Auburn’s TJ Leon as swimming candidates for this prestigious and valuable award. Vanderbilt is the only remaining school that has yet to announce their nominees, and with a women’s swimming program, there’s a chance that this list could grow by one later this week.
The winner of the award will be announced on May 6th.
