MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas swim and dive teams continued its hot start to the 2024-25 season. Both the Tommies men’s and women’s programs found success in Davenport, Iowa Friday afternoon, when they traveled across state lines to take on St. Ambrose University. In the end, the Bees sting was not nearly as bad as St. Thomas’ bite, as the Tommies earned a clean sweep down in Iowa. St. Thomas’ men’s team defeated St. Ambrose 127-144, while the women dominated en route to a 194-44 victory.

MEN’S RESULTS: ST. THOMAS (127) vs. ST. AMBROSE (114)
The Tommie men were deadlocked in a close dual with the Bees, but a handful of clutch victories secured St. Thomas’ second victory of the 2024-25 season. Sophomore freestyler Tommy Seiler (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) earned the team’s first individual win of the night, as he and teammate Charlie Folks (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) went 1-2 in the 1650 freestyle with times of 16:52.51 and 16:58.66 respectively. However, the 1650 freestyle wasn’t the only event Seiler won Friday night, as he also claimed the top spot in the 200 butterfly, winning the race with a time of 1:57.83.

Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) and Sam Sacor (Park Ridge, Ill. / Main South) were the only other Tommie swimmers to win an individual race Friday evening. After a second place finish in the 200 IM, Jensen rebounded with a victory in the 200 backstroke, earning key points for St. Thomas with his time of 1:53.55. Sacor, then, won the final individual race of the evening thanks to his impressive time of 2:10.68 in the 200 breaststroke.

Austin Kantor (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) claimed big points for St. Thomas on the diving boards, sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. The sophomore won the 1-meter competition with a six-dive score of 221.15 before claiming the 3-meter title with a score of 172.80. Teammate Julius Krumenacher (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha North) finished second behind Kantor in both events with scores of 217.05 and 141.70 respectively.

In addition to these winning performances, the Tommies also saw several swimmers finish in the top-3 of their respective races. St. Thomas’ “A” 200 medley relay team of John Wion (Ashley, Ohio / Big Walnut), Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century), Jensen and Carter Fask (Elmhurst, Ill. / Fenwick) opened the night with a second place finish in the race, setting up a strong night for the Tommie swimmers. Fask would go on to be the highest finisher in the 50 freestyle, finishing second with a time of 21.48, while Richard earned top-3 finishes in both the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM Friday evening.

Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha West) earned top-3 finishes in both the 200 and 500 freestyle races, finishing second as an individual, and led the 400 freestyle relay team to a second place finish as well. Morgan Gillard (Woodbury, Minn. / East Ridge) finished third in the 100 freestyle, the highrst finisher for St. Thomas.

WOMEN’S RESULTS: ST. THOMAS (194) vs. St. AMBROSE (44)
The Tommie women’s swim and dive team won all 13 events Friday evening, including both relays and both diving events to secure a dominant 194-44 win. In total, five women won multiple events, including sophomore diver Hattie Opdahl (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes). Opdahl kicked off the dual by winning the 1-meter event with a six-dive score of 257.35. She then claimed the top spot in the 3-meter with a six-dive score of 162.70, sweeping the diving events for the third consecutive weekend.

Opdahl set the tone for the next event, as St. Thomas’ “A” 200 medley relay team won the race by nearly four seconds. The team of Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation), Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler), Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Cambridge) and Madelin Francois (Sartell, Minn. / Sartell) swam the race in 1:47.78, beating St. Ambrose’s top team by over three seconds to win the Tommies second event of the event. Hess and Francois then went on to win their own events as individuals, with Hess claiming the top spot in the 200 breaststroke thanks to a time of 2:26.56, while Francois won the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.43.

Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Davenport Central) put together three outstanding performances in her return to her hometown, winning multiple races Friday night. The first year claimed the top spot in the 200 freestyle, clocking a time of 1:56.48 before leading the 400 freestyle relay team to victory in the team’s final event of the night. Selden, along with teammates Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes), Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) and Francois handily won the race thanks to a time of 3:37.25.

Undem also had a big night in the pool for St. Thomas, earning victories in the 400 freestyle relay and 100 freestyle. The first year just beat out her teammates in the second fastest event of the night, finishing in first with a time of 52.88.

While Undem won one of the fastest races of the night, Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) won the longest. The senior claimed the top spot in the 1650 freestyle thanks to a time of 18:34.39 and was the lone Tommie swimmer to finish in the top-3 in the event. Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.45, completing the freestyle sweep for St. Thomas Friday evening.

Tessa Jones (Marengo, Ill. / Marian Central Catholic), Madison Parkin (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) and Jin-Jae Robinson (Galena, Ohio / Olentangy Berlin) rounded out the night for the Tommies, claiming wins in the 200 IM, 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke. Jones outtouched Hess to claim the 200 IM title with a time of 2:13.43, while Parkin claimed the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:15.04. Robinson then won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.03.

UP NEXT
Fans will see the St. Thomas women’s swim and dive team back in action on November 2, when the Tommies host Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul in a Triangular. The men will enjoy next weekend off but will return as both teams host St. Cloud State University for a dual on November 9.

St. Ambrose dropped a dual to Division I St. Thomas Friday at the Davenport Central Natatorium. The Bee men narrowly fell 127-114 while the SAU women lost 194-44.

The SAU men won five individual events and both relays. Jonas Friess and Cory Werrett each led the way with a pair of individual golds. Friess won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.41 and then won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.05. Juan Gomez finished fifth and Benny Zarhin was seventh in the 200 free, while Luke Sproule and Sam Gillham took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 500 free.

Werrett won both freestyle sprints, claiming the 50-yard freestyle in 20.95 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 46.86 seconds. Brett Jones (47.93) was runner-up in the 100 free and placed fourth in the 50 free. Riley Stevenson (21.62) came in third in the 50 free and Carter Gaber was fourth in the 100 free.

The other men’s champion was Mikhi Hassim whose time of 1:56.42 won the 200-yard individual medley. Jayden Coetzer was fifth.

Coetzer touched the wall second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.67. Gavin Hopewell placed fifth and Egoitz Munoz was seventh. Gomez placed second in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59.52. Marat Usov (2:00.69) was third and Sproule seventh. Usov also earned a third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle in 17:01.71. Gillham was fifth. Luke Thomas claimed third place in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.75. Joseph Blasen was sixth and Walter De Jongh finished seventh.

Lane Otte and Bram Mess finished back-to-back in the diving events. Otte was third in the 1-meter competition with a score of 196.35, just edging Mess, who finished with a 195.80. Mess (127.25) was third in the 3-meter event with Otte taking fourth.

Gaber, Werrett, Hassim and Stevenson won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.35. The team of Jones, Hassim, Stevenson and Friess won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:08.18.

The St. Ambrose women’s top efforts were three runner-up finishes. Grace Bobeldyk was second in the 1650-yard freestyle in 18:48.31. Bryn Kiley (18:52.15) was third and Annaliese Bowser took sixth. Leyre Antonanzas was second in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:17.34, while Bobeldyk finished fourth and Emily Henson sixth. The other Bee runner-up was Bridget O’Grady who was second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.39. Kennedy Capman was fourth and Irene Artabe sixth. Artabe also finished eighth in the 200-yard individual medley.

Antonanzas added a fourth-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle. Bowser was seventh. Anna Gute was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.52 seconds. Kiley was fifth and Ruthie Gemmen took seventh.

Alexis HillSylvia Zipperer and Sarah Priewe took fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle. Sophia Ewanic placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, just ahead of Riley Loeffler (sixth) and Rylie Steinkamp (seventh). Ewanic also took sixth in the women’s 1-meter diving with a score of 151.70.

Artabe, O’Grady, Antonanzas and Gute were second in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.96. Gute, Ewanic, Bobeldyk and Kiley were third in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:44.49.

The Bees jump right back into the pool Saturday at Quincy University.
