Sprint News 6/21/12: Singapore Olympians; Matt Ense to Depauw

…The San Jose Mercury News has named Tom Kremer and Jasmine Tosky as their Boys’ and Girls’ Swimmers of the Year. Kremer made headlines when he took almost a full second off of a 30-year old Central Coast Section Record in the 100 fly that was previously held by the legendary Pablo Morales, and Tosky broke several Section Records of her own. Check out Chris Morgan’s great interviews with them from the CCS Championships here

…DePauw University has named Matt Ense as the new head coach of their women’s swimming program. He will replace Mary Bretscher, who was the head of the Tigers for 38-seasons, who retired from coaching earlier this year. Ense was formerly an assistant at Denison, where he was a part of the staff that led the men’s 2011 and 2012 NCAA Division III National Championships (breaking the legendary streak at Kenyon). Ense also has experience working with Michigan men’s coach Mike Bottom when he was at the Race Club in the run-up to the 2008 Olympics, and at Union College.  Ense was named by collegeswimming.com as the 2012 Rising Assistant of the Year, which shows how fast his star is taking off...

At only 16, he’s already marked a 1:56.67 in the 200 fly. Li was a finalist in the 100 fly in 2008, but has had a rough run since then. That includes making several high-profile coaching changes, and both athletes suffering from food poisoning at last year’s Southeast Asian Games. Her best of the qualifying period was a 58.78 at last year’s World Championships…
