For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Duke Garvin, a two-time Speedo Sectionals finalist, announced his intention to swim for Cornell University beginning next season.
A senior at Dexter Southfield School in Brookline, MA, Garvin has been a valuable member of the Shields’ varsity swim and dive team for the past four years. At last season’s NEPSAC Division III Championships, Garvin brought home the championship title in the 200 free (1:44.00) and 500 free (4:37.90), in addition to helping the Shields to a victory in the 200 medley relay.
Garvin also currently trains year-round with Crimson Aquatics, primarily specializing in mid-distance and distance freestyle.
At the 2024 Winter Junior Championship East back in December, Garvin turned in several strong performances in his events. He turned in a season-best time of 1:41.64 in the 200 free and finished 27th in the 1650 free (15:36.47) and 48th in the 500 free (4:30.73).
Garvin enjoyed a series of tremendous performances at the 2024 Speedo Sectionals last March, racking up six lifetime best times and three Futures cuts. He placed 5th in the 1650 free (15:31.56 – PB), 6th in the 1000 free (9:19.65 – PB), 11th in the 500 free (4:29.82 – PB) and 19th in the 200 free (1:41.47 – PB). Garvin also helped his team to a 9th-place finish in the 200 free relay and a 17th-place finish in the 400 medley relay.
Best Times SCY
- 100 free – 48.60
- 200 free – 1:41.47
- 500 free – 4:29.82
- 1000 free – 9:19.65
- 1650 free – 15:31.56
A Division I Mid-Major program, Cornell competes in the Ivy League, where the men’s team recently placed 5th at the Ivy League Championships in early March. To make it back for finals, it took times of 44.19/1:42.86/4:25.44 in the 100/200/500 free, meaning Garvin would have landed in the C-final in the 200 free. He also would have placed 17th in the 1650 free with his current best time.
In addition to his swimming career, Garvin ran cross country and track for Dexter and was a part of the Shields’ record-setting 4×400 meters relay team in 2022. He is also a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
Set to join Garvin in the pool next season are Clay Baumann, Leonel Cerda, Soren Koschmann, Will Chen and Quinn Caputo, who should all make for strong training partners over the next four years.
