The Royal Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN) has announced rosters for a quartet of meets for 2022: the World Junior Championships, European Junior Championships, the Mediterranean Games, and the European Youth Olympic Festival.

Mediterranean Games

An open-age meet, this is easily Spain’s biggest roster for this summer so far. The event will be hosted in Spain from July 1-5, shortly after the World Championships, in Oran, Spain.

As a hosted meet, Spain is putting extra weight on this multi-sport event. At the last edition in 2018, a Spanish roster that included Mireia Belmonte, Hugo Gonzalez, Lidon Munoz, Melani Costa, and a number of other top Spanish swimmers came away with 5 gold and 26 total medals. That ranked them second behind Italy in the overall medals table.

World Junior Swimming Championships

Spain has named a very small initial list for the 2022 World Junior Swimming Championships, though the roster will be finalized after the Spanish Championships in Sabadell in July.

The 2022 World Junior Championships will run from August 30 through September 4, 2022. Already postponed once by the COVID-19 pandemic, the meet was then pulled from Kazan, Russia after Russia invaded Ukraine in February.

Many of the top swimming nations, including the United States, have withdrawn from the meet already in favor of other competition.

Spain has done well at this meet historically. In 2019, they won 1 gold and 1 silver medal to rank 7th in the medals table. The country ranks 8th all-time in the medals standings with 24 medals in the first 7 editions of the championships.

All four swimmers named to this team so far have been named to at least one other junior team for the summer. Estella Tonrath has been named to two.

Women

  • Emma Carrasco – CN Sant Andreu
  • Maria Ramos – CD Gredos San Diego
  • Estella Tonrath – C Campusesport

Men

  • Carlos Garach Benito – CN Churriana

European Junior Swimming Championships

The 2022 European Junior Championships will be held from June 27th-July 10th, with the swimming portion scheduled for July 5th-10th.

The meet is held almost every year, though the 2020 edition was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, it had been held annually since 1982.

Spain won two medals at the meet last year to finish 15th in the overall medals table. Carmen Wieler won gold in the 50 backstroke and Paula Otero won bronze in the 1500 free.

This roster includes one of the lone junior who will pull triple duty this summer: Estella Tonrath. She will swim at World Juniors, European Juniors, and the European Youth Olympic Festival.

  • Marta Carmona – CN Albacete
  • Emma Carrasco – CN Sant Andreu
  • Carla Carron – CN Arzua

European Youth Olympic Festival

The 2022 European Youth Olympic Festival will take place from July 24-30 in Banksa Bystrica, Slovakia. The biannual multi-sport event was held every two years from 1991 through 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the 2021 event to 2022.

At the 2019 edition, Spain won just one medal, a bronze from Carmen Weiler in the 100 free. Weiler has now graduated to the World Championship team for 2022. The absence of Russia in 2022, which led all countries with 14 gold and 18 total medals, should open up more medals for the rest of the field this year.

Spain will send 8 boys and 8 girls to this meet, which is an increase from the 13 they sent to the 2019 meet.
