Southern Illinois Wins Men’s, Women’s Tri-Meet in Arkansas

Little Rock, Southern Illinois, and Henderson State Tri-Meet

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Little Rock swimming and diving team won three individual events, defeated in-state opponents Henderson State and fell to Southern Illinois on Friday, besting the former 268-86 and dropping the conference battle 171-87. Annya Grom won the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly while Jaelle Carlson finished as runner-up in the 50 free before picking up a victory of her own in the 100 freestyle.

“The last few weeks have been challenging in a multitude of ways and this team continues to push through and set new standards,” said head coach Amy Burgess. “Together, this group is going to be one to watch this next month!”

Freestyle Highlights
Grom earned the first Trojan first-place finish of the day in the 50 freestyle, throwing down a blistering 23.43, just two-tenths off of her season-best time from the Kansas Classic. Jaelle took second with a time of 24.45, while Asmalia Redzuan collected a season-best 24.92 for fifth place.

Jaelle returned in the 100 freestyle, storming her way to a time of 52.05 and holding off the second-place SIU finisher by less than two tenths of a second. She is still undefeated in the event in dual meets.

Lea Zengerling continues to lead Little Rock in the mid-distance events. The senior finished fourth in the 200 and 500, out-touching an SIU swimmer by five one-hundredths of a second in the former while less than two seconds out of reach of a pair of conference rivals in the latter.

Clare Sprinkle turned in a fourth-place finish in her first 1000 of the year. The sophomore touched the wall at 11:14.06 as the sole Trojan in the race.

Butterfly Highlights
The sprint butterfliers had a strong showing, with four Trojans in the top six, all under the one minute mark. Little Rock was led by Grom, who posted a quick 55.64 to finish over a second ahead of second place and less than two tenths off of her season best. Redzuan put up a solid time of 57.54 for third place, while Lauren Gray and Carolyn Godwin went 5-6 with times of 58.69 and 59.97, respectively.

In the 200 fly, Devin Trammell earned a season-best time, touching the wall in second in 2:12.58. Fer Moussier took third with a time of 2:16.14.

Backstroke Highlights
Olivia Henderson posted a solid 2:08.43 in the 200 backstroke for second place overall thanks to her consistent splits. Meanwhile, Caitlin Romprey was the sole Trojan scorer in the 100 back, taking fourth in 59.91, just tenths away from third. Romprey also raced in the 200 backstroke, placing fifth in 2:12.50.

Breaststroke Highlights
Godwin was the top Trojan in the 100, finishing with a time of 1:10.53. In the longer breaststroke race, it was Lexie Shelton, stopping the clock at 2:31.03.

200 IM Highlights
Trammell came away with another season-best in the 200 IM, touching the wall at 2:14.80 for fourth place. Classmate Lauren Pieniazkiewicz wasn’t far off, taking fifth with a time of 2:15.57.

Relays
The Trojans finished second in the 400 medley, posting a time of 3:55.68, their fastest in-season time yet. The Trojans were less than half a second away from Southern Illinois in the 200 freestyle relay, touching the wall at 1:36.04. Once again, Little Rock showed consistency, just five one-hundredths of a second away from their season-best time.

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas —  Southern Illinois swimming swept both podiums in the last tri-meet of the 20221-22 season at Little Rock. The women walked away with wins against Little Rock and Henderson State with 171 points to the Tojans and 212 points to HSU, while the men surmounted 184 points against the men of the Division II Reddies’ 78.

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

Apryl Paquette took home her first first-place finish in an event this season. The freshman from Florida notched her new personal best in the 1000-freestyle, touching the wall at 10:35.22.

Coming up to battle with her fourth first-place title of the season was sophomore Fernanda Sanchez in the 200-freestyle. Having only competed in the event once this year, the Mexico-native clocked in at 1:55.15 as the leading Saluki. She also completed her first “three-peat” of her career, winning first-place accolades in the 500-free and 200-IM throughout the afternoon.

Canadian sophomore Ella Kerr preserved through the 200-breaststroke. Kerr clocked in at 2:24.07, just ahead of the runner-up spot held by Saluki Melanie Scheiblein.

Freshman Celia Pulido took home first-place titles in her signature events, 100- (54.59) and 200-back (1:57.59), while also marking two new pool records inside the Donaghey Aquatic Center.

MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

Junior Terry Yang made the distance for the SIU men up against Henderson State. Yang hit the wall at 10:03.75 to mark a first place title in the 1000-freestyle, followed by teammates Ben Rutledge (10:08.02), and Austin Kinsler (10:08.39).

Finding his second best-time of 2021-22, Gustav Persson was the lead in another Saluki sweep of the podium in the 100-breaststroke at 58.00 even. He also took home the top spot in the 200, clocking in at 2:08.04.

Junior Max Ransom found the first place title in the 200-fly (1:57.21), his first of 2022. The 1, 2, 3 spots were all held by Southern Illinois with sophomore Trey Smith (1:58.54), and freshman Selim Hassan (2:00.01).

Wrapping up with the relays was the quartet of Zander MinanoAlex SantiagoWill Chavez, and Donat Csuvarszki at 1:23.09 in the 200-free relay to wrap up the Salukis’ time in the water at Little Rock.

The Dawgs have a quick turnaround before they are back in the pool tomorrow, while the women host Indiana State to a dual inside Shea Natatorium at 1pm.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Patryk Dabrowski, Jace Pinckney and Lamar Taylor each took first-place nods on the afternoon as Henderson State competed in their second-to-last regular season meets Friday afternoon in Little Rock against a pair of Division I teams. The men swam against Southern Illinois while the women swam against both Arkansas-Little Rock and the Salukis.

The men dropped their meet against Little Rock, 184-78, while the Red Wave women fell in their dual-meet to Southern Illinois and Little Rock, 212-47 and 168-86, respectively.

Patryk Dabrowski claimed an impressive pair of first-place finishes over Southern Illinois in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle. Dabrowski came out with a bang in the 200 as he finished just three seconds shy of the HSU record, touching the wall first at 1:41.89.

In the 500, the sophomore from Wroclaw, Poland, topped the podium with a time of 4:49.58, edging out his second-place SIU competitor by 11 hundredths of a second.

Fellow sophomore Jase Pinckney was the other Red Wave member to see victory on the afternoon as he took top honors in the 100 fly. His time of 50.63 was also a mere three seconds shy of former-teammate Stephen Jones school record.

Lamar Taylor finished out the winners for the men as the current school record holder defeated a pair of Saluki swimmers in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.87. The Freeport, Bahamas, native followed that with a third-place finish in the 200 back (1:58.06).

For the women, Ceci MagnaniKiara Pozvai and Emma Jorgensen each earned Top-3 finishes in their respective races. Magnani beat out her competition from Little Rock by nearly five whole seconds as the senior distance swimmer touched at 11:09.68.

Kiara Pozvai also defeated any UALR swimmer in the 200 freestyle as she finished in third with a time of 1:57.74. The freshman followed that with yet another third-place finish out of 20 swimmers in the 100 free (52.78). Pozvai did not compete in the 50 free.

Fellow freshman Emma Jorgensen followed suit by beating her Little Rock competition in the 200 IM, finding her way onto the podium with a 2:11.87 time.

Henderson State will close out its 2021-22 regular season with the second edition of the Battle of the Ravine when HSU goes over to the Waggoner Pool on OBU’s campus Friday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
