Simone Manuel on 2021 Olympic berth: “I don’t quit”

2021 U.S. OLYMPIC SWIMMING TRIALS

Reported by James Sutherland.

WOMEN’S 50 FREE FINAL

  • World Record: Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) – 23.67 (2017)
  • American Record: Simone Manuel – 23.97 (2017)
  • US Open Record: Simone Manuel (USA) – 24.10 (2018)
  • World Junior Record: Claire Curzan (USA) – 24.17 (2021)
  • 2016 Olympic Champion: Pernille Blume (DEN) – 24.07
  • 2016 US Olympic Trials Champion: Abbey Weitzeil – 24.28
  • Wave I Cut: 25.99
  • Wave II Cut: 25.65
  • FINA ‘A’ Cut: 24.77
  1. Simone Manuel (ALTO), 24.29
  2. Abbey Weitzeil (CAL), 24.30
  3. Torri Huske (AAC), 24.46

Simone Manuel has always thrived under pressure, and she delivered in spades in tonight’s women’s 50 free final.

Manuel, 24, edged out a tightly-bunched field at the finishing wall in a time of 24.29, qualifying her for the U.S. Olympic team after missing the 100 free final.

Manuel’s time is her fastest since the 2019 World Championships, where she was the gold medalist in a time of 24.05.

Taking the runner-up spot was Abbey Weitzeil, meaning the two women that represented the U.S. in this event in Rio will do so again in Tokyo.

Just curious, had the 50 free been the first event, and Simone qualied. What would the chances be we would not have heard about OTS?

Just curious because Nathan Adrian could have complained about Covid, being a father and OTS and he gave the most gracious speech of them all

please & thank you

Canned responses only, ladies. Lest you be accused of ‘making excuses’ or in King’s case of the worst case of bullying the sport has ever seen. ‘I tried to mess with her a little in the ready room, but she wasn’t havin’ it, and I respect that’. And whatever you do, don’t thank God. My goodness, the SwimSwam commentary is something.

What’s the point in comparing the two? He didn’t have to miss three weeks of physical activity this year. I remember getting one, maybe 2 weeks off a year and feeling like a complete flop that first day back. That has to be excruciating as a defending Olympic and 2x world champion.

What’s keeping most folks on here from supporting Simone, especially as swammers who have all experienced this (albeit to a far less intense and successful degree).

Bunch of keyboard warriors.

Well for one, Adrian had cancer. Second, why didnt Adrian go on and lament about recent hate crimes against Asian Americans? Adrian had a host of excuses he could have had and he made zero.

Did a reporter ask Adrian about hate crimes against Asian Americans?

I think those committing those hate crimes would take a pass if they rolled up on Adrian.

Everyone already knows Adrian’s story. What he has done is incredible, no doubt, and he is certainly a hero. Would you rather Simone just struggle in silence? If Simone didn’t speak up about what she went through people would be trashing her, her coach, Stanford, etc. for her performances. Turns out, even though she decided to make people aware people still trash her. At least those of us who support her now understand what she’s been dealing with and can have more hope for her future. It seems to have lifted a bit of weight from her shoulders as well. I can’t personally speak to the emotional toll it takes being a Black woman in swimming vs. an being an… Read more »

She had an underwhelming 2015 Worlds and 2018 Pan Pacs. Did she make any excuses then? Did you slander Katie Ledecky when she was sick at 2019 Worlds? Kathleen went 2:08 in the 200 back at the end of the meet. Do you think she faked an injured foot because she swam better at the end of the meet than the beginning of the meet?

Unfortunately many on here did and do continue to slander Katie, and have also claimed Kathleen faked her injury. It’s honestly mind blowing to read. It’s so courageous to sling mud from behind a computer.

What happened to that “Overtraining Syndrome” of hers?
I guess she miraculously got cured in two days time coz…
most of everything she delivers best under pressure! Now
let’s watch the Aussie & Euro girls throw a party in the 100
final with no American present. Bcoz Abbey is so perfectly
good for 12th or 13th in the semis. But hey, life’s too short,
so good luck with the 50 (Simone), at least you’re going to
have the chance (and the pleasure) to compete…

Who hurt you man?? Try and put all that suppressed frustration into doing something about and coaching a 100 freestyler for 2024 I guess

It’s a 50m. I didn’t swim for almost a year and when I can back I dropped half a second.

I remember after our summer championship season we had over a month off, when we came back our first practice was a single 50 free as fast as we could go, almost everyone out of a group of 30 kids was within half a second of their best time, after 5 weeks completely out of the water. a 50 free is entirely different and much easier to maintain, especially if you had speed to begin with

Delighted that Simone made the team. You could not have anything but love and support for her, after her totally honest interview after her failing to make the 100 Free final.

Simone is a fantastic ambassador or the sport, transcends US swimming and transcends swimming. She is so articulate and boy what a competitor! Go Simone!

Good for you Simone!

Such a super strong human being!

Extremely rare for an athlete to defeat OTS in a couple of days.

Hoping the coaches will select you to anchor all relays. Australia should be afraid. Very afraid!

Always knew the hate for Simone was simmering beneath the surface for a lot of people. It couldn’t rise to the top because she was winning. As soon as she slipped up with a bad race/meet, the snakes reveal themselves.

Simone has carried US female sprinting on her back for the past 5 years. Nobody else has stepped up in a country of 300 million people to constantly battle and win against Kromo, Blume, SS, C-1, C2, McKeon, etc. I got much respect for Comerford and Abbey because they’ve shown up at times. C1 said it, AUS with 23 million people has 4 women under 53 secs and 6 under 53.5 secs in the 100free right now. The US has… Read more »

I remember being struck by how hateful the comments were on here during the 2019 World Championships when she had arguably one of her best meets. Mel Stewart has said that there is a particular intensity to the way people go after Manuel. It’s disheartening and infuriating…and not at all surprising.

Sarah Sjostrom is the name to worry about in the women’s 100 meter freestyle.

The following have never medalled in the women’s 100 meter freestyle at the Summer Olympics:

C1 = Choke 1
C2 = Choke 2
McKeon

It’s time for Penny Oleksiak to show that the 2016 Summer Olympics performance in the women’s 100 meter freestyle was no fluke.

How out of touch are you? Sjostrom is recovering from an olecranon fracture just months ago. And Penny hasn’t been a factor since 2016.

Nothing against Simone but the gushing over her is over the top. It’s good for NBC and her sponsors and the overall marketing strategies aligned with her. I was so tired hearing “she has to be on the team”. It’s insulting to the other women trying to make the team. Her like 8 references to God in her post race interview also annoying. I’m sure God doesn’t care if she gets top 2 in the 50.Shes on the team but team would’ve been fine without her.

I don’t dislike Simone. She’s not the 1 saying , omg she has to make team or team is doomed. Thank god once and move on. Adrian on the other hand handled everything with class. I am buying Modello next time I buy beer.

Fans have historically been harsh on top tier athletes. I wonder how much of this is the fans believing she was our best chance at gold in the 100 and for that relay to be successful. They are just venting on that frustration.
