Steenbergen on 100 Free World Record: “It still feels so weird… I hope that it will sink in”

67th SETTE COLLI TROPHY

Video captured by Aglaia Pezzato.

WORLD RECORDDD! This evening in Rome, Dutch world champion Marrit Steenbergen continued her transcendent season in the 100 free. After already dropping a historic 51.94 last month, Steenbergen dropped a bomb tonight and touched at 51.68. This broke Sarah Sjostrom’s 9-year-old World Record by .03, becoming the first woman to go sub-51.7. After the race, Steenbergen still hadn’t processed the swim, saying that it still felt weird that she was the new world record-holder.

Interesting question by Braden below on how many races can KD actually do.

I looked it up. 4 elite swimmers have successfully raced in 5 individual events at a single major competition:

Michael Phelps (2008 Beijing, 2003 Worlds)
Caeleb Dressel (2020 Tokyo)
Sarah Sjostrom (2019 Worlds)
Summer McIntosh (2025 Worlds).

Obviously not an easy feat. Respect.

It’s a shame there won’t be a global championship this year.

Imagine w100free final with Steenbergen, Moesch, Haughey, MOC, Huske, Harris, Curtis

Hopefully they won’t slow down in 2027

It’s either Huske or Douglas.

I already named Anna Moesch and every country can only send two swimmers per event.

Without looking at the schedule, have to believe KD gives it up because how many races can she actually do??
