Gretchen Walsh on First LCM Freestyle World Record: “I’m here”

62ND SETTE COLLI TROPHY

Gretchen Walsh made it a night to remember in Rome, kicking off the last finals session with a world record. The sprinting ace won the women’s 50 free final in 23.55, breaking her teammate Kate Douglass’ week-old world record of 23.59.

After the race, Walsh seemed energized by the momentum she has built heading into the LA2028 Olympic Games. After many doubted her abilities in the LCM pool earlier in her career, the Virginia grad stated emphatically, “I’m here… I’m going to try to keep breaking world records in everything”.

I never understand when the swimmers forget to use their kick. There are only so many propulsion methods available.

The Walsh sisters are chatty. Good interviewees.

Gretchen,

The 50 free is a Mickey Mouse event. Let me know when you are “here” in a real event.

I am really not pro censorship but as it is 2026 and that battle is rather lost, is this not just cyberbullying and while yes I’m sure GW is just fine still think it would be healthier for the mods to actually remove this sort of comment.

Would’ve been more epic if she had said, “I’m her.”

Seeing Gretchen build confidence over the last 2 years has been such a joy. I’m sure it’s been a lot of work both physically and mentally, so props to her. She has really come into her own!

Wow, congratulations to her! It is so crazy to see two Sjostrom records get beat in about a week, and one of them get beat twice! Women’s sprinting is ridiculously fun right now. You never know what crazy thing you are going to see. I’m loving this competitive spirit.

Also, wow, great times from Sarah Curtis and Sjostrom herself! Can’t believe that lady had a baby less than a year ago, and can still put up a sub-54.
