The Shawnee High School girls and the Carl Albert High School boys successfully defended their Oklahoma (OSSAA) 5A state titles over the weekend, both earning narrow wins in what was a tight team race.
GIRLS’ RECAP
The Shawnee girls won their fourth consecutive 5A title thanks in part to a pair of relay wins and a standout individual performance from senior Gracyn Simpson.
Kicking off the meet in the 200 medley relay, the Shawnee quartet of Tenielle Kidd (30.88), Makenzie Burch (35.50), Simpson (26.97) and Kimberly Albers (27.28) combined for a time of 2:00.63 to comfortably beat runner-up Carl Albert (2:02.85).
At the end of the meet in the 400 free relay, Shawnee punctuated their team title as Simpson led off in 55.65 and was joined by Kidd, Ashley McDonald and Albers as they won by nearly four seconds in 3:56.54.
Individually, Simpson won the 50 free in a new personal best of 24.77, and she was also the runner-up in the 100 fly (1:01.15).

The standout performer of the meet was Holland Hall senior Canaan Brice, who set a new 5A state record in the 100 breast and also picked up a victory in the 100 free.
In the 100 breast, Brice clocked 55.47 in the prelims to lower the 5A record of 56.57 set by Typ Winnery in 2010.
In the final, Brice got down to 55.20 to reset his newly minted record and win the title by more than three seconds. Both swims marked new best times, with his previous best sitting at 56.24 set in December.
Earlier in the meet in the 100 free, Brice, a senior, and his younger brother, James, a sophomore, went 1-2, with C. Brice clocking 45.30 for the victory and J. Brice going 48.91 in 2nd. The two brothers are from South Africa.
J. Brice had a win of his own in the 50 free, clocking 21.90 to mark his first time under the 22-second barrier.
