MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swimming team finished their last home meet of the season by honoring their nine seniors and beating Azusa Pacific.

MEET RECAP

The Waves had an outstanding last home meet, sweeping the Cougars in the swimming events. The meet started off with the 3-meter diving competition in which Paulina Holmberg took fourth place. Holmberg was also the leader for the Waves in the 1-meter, taking fifth.

Starting the swimming competition, the team of Caroline EckelEmily MortonSarah Hamilton and Amy Griffin won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.17. In the 1,000 freestyle race, Sophia Anderson won in a time of 1:17.62. The next event was the 200 freestyle, wherein Sammie Slater took home the victory, swimming a 1:55.15.

Eckel stepped up for another big win in the 100 backstroke, with a 59.30. Senior Anna Riekhof took home two individual titles in the 100 breaststroke at 1:08.34 and the 200 breaststroke tying with a 2:28.46.

Freshman Caroline Anderson had an excellent race winning the 200 butterfly with a 2:10.35. Pepperdine had the top seven spots in the 50 freestyle, led by Jasmine Williams who won with a 24.92. Julianna Birlin was the top swimmer in the 100 freestyle, taking first with a time of 53.66.

Morton took home two individual wins on the day in the 200 backstroke with a 2:06.10 and 400 IM with a 4:33.02. Olivia Kayye had the top 500 time, racing a 5:20.22. Pepperdine had another outstanding performance in the 100 fly, with Nohea Lileikis leading all athletes with a 59.74.

The final race of the day was the 400 freestyle relay, where Birlin, Lileikis, Slater and Griffin won with a time of 3:35.65.

NEXT UP: The Waves will compete in the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championships in two weeks. The meet will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12th through Saturday Feb. 15th at East Los Angeles College.

PRESS RELEASE – AZUSA PACIFIC

MALIBU, Calif. – Azusa Pacific swim and dive traveled up north to Malibu for a dual meet on Saturday against Division I Pepperdine. The Waves took down the short-handed Cougars 166.25-124.5. Four Azusa Pacific seniors competed in their final dual meet of their collegiate careers, as Samantha EscalanteKara Galvan, Anais Hacobian and Madison Johnson each swam for the Cougars today.

Escalante swam in three different events on the day for the Cougars. She began the day as a member of a 200 medley relay team, and then went on to swim the 200 yard butterfly and the 400 yard IM. In the 200 yard butterfly, Escalante posted a time of 2:16.22. She then swam the 400 yard IM in 5:00.43.

Hacobian had a busy day for the Cougars, as she swam in four different events. She began her day with the 50 yard freestyle, posting a score of 26.88, which was the fastest time of any Cougar in the event. Next, she posted a score of 59.12 in the 100 yard freestyle. Her final individual event of the day was the 100 yard butterfly, which she finished in a time of 1:07.59 and posted a second-place finish. She ended her day in the 400 yard freestyle relay, which her team had a time of 3:59.46.

Johnson began the day on the same 200 medley relay team as Escalante. The duo teamed up with Heather Lee and Naomi Vaughn to post a time of 2:13.32. Johnson then swam two individual events for the Cougars, as she competed in the 100 yard backstroke and the 200 yard backstroke. She had times of 1:11.36 (100 back) and 2:32.68 (200 back).

Galvan also swam in three events for the Cougars. Her first event of the meet was the 400 yard freestyle relay, followed by the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.81) and the 50 yard freestyle (28.31).

“I am extremely proud of our seniors and their performance today,” said head coach Tim Kyle, “All of them have poured their hearts into the program. Cougs for life!”

Across all 17 events on the day, Azusa Pacific took first place in five total events, second in eight events, and third place in eight events. Individually, Amanda Anderson had a solid performance for the Cougars. Anderson took first place in the 400 yard IM, and was second in both the 200 yard breaststroke and the 100 yard backstroke. On the boards, Melia Stout took first place in the three-meter competition, while Amy Crayne won the one-meter event. The Cougars swept first through fourth in the three-meter, and one through third in the one meter.

Azusa Pacific now turns its attention and preparation towards the PCSC Conference Championships. The championship meet will be held February 12-15 in Monterey Park, Calif. at the ELAC Swim Stadium.
