The Summer Sectional meet at Westmont kicked off yesterday at the FMC Aquatic Center, featuring many of the top junior swimmers in Illinois and the surrounding states, as well as contingents of swimmers from college teams like Michigan, Louisville, Northwestern, Iowa, and Illinois among others.

Last night’s finals session went off with a bang, seeing Louisville’s Julia Dennis win the women’s 100 free in 55.76. That was a strong swim out of Dennis, coming in just off her career best of 55.43, which she swam last summer. Coming in 2nd was Michigan’s Abbey Ketslakh, who clocked a new career best of 56.32. Ketslakh had just swum her previous PB of 56.75 less than two weeks ago at the Eric Namesnik Memorial Open in Ann Arbor.

The men’s 200 breast saw a phenomenal swim out of RISE Aquatic Club’s Colin Zhang, who won the event in 2:14.73. Zhang, who will begin his collegiate career at Penn this fall, took nearly a second off his personal best of 2:15.53, which had stood since August of 2022. Zhang swam a very consistent race last night, splitting 30.79 on the opening 50, then splitting 34.67, 34.17, and 35.10 respectively the rest of the way.

The men’s 200 fly saw Aquajets’ Nathan Carr pull out a victory in 2:03.12, leading a close race between himself, Wisconsin’s Charlie Jones (2:03.50), and Hinsdale Swim Club’s Henry Guo (2:03.67).

In the women’s 200 fly, Texas’ Campbell Stoll clocked a decisive win, touching in 2:13.75. That swim comes in just off her career best of 2:12.92.
