Rio Torch Relay Day 89: Four More Cities On The Way To Rio

On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.

On the 89th of the Olympic torch relay, the torch travelled through four more cities on it’s way to Rio, with less than a week remaining before it will light the Olympic flame during the Opening Ceremonies on Friday, August 5th.

The torch travelled approximately 80 km on the day, heading east from Teresópolis ultimately ending up in Nova Friburgo. Teresópolis is located in the mountainous region of Região Serrana and is home to the Brazilian national football team. It is also home to Serra dos Órgãos National Park, a popular tourist attraction.

The torch then headed 20 km south to Guapimirim, a city of just over 51,000 with an abundance of natural attractions making the city a budding area for tourists. From the torch travelled 45 km east to Cachoeiras De Macacu, which translates to ‘Macacu Waterfalls’. It has become a popular destination for people participating in extreme sports and ecotourism.

The torch headed 40 km north to it’s final destination of the day, Nova Friburgo. Nova Friburgo is located in the mountainous region in the meso-region center of the state, 136 km outside of state capital Rio. A few of their attractions include Alpine-style architecture on some of their buildings and the Swiss House.
