The men’s breaststroke events around the world keep getting faster and now Austria has joined the party.
Competing on day 2 of the 2021 ATUS Graz Trophy, Bernhard Reitshammer became the first man from Austria to ever break the minute barrier in the 100m breaststroke.
After setting himself up as the 2nd seeded swimmer with an easy 1:02.82 outing this morning, Reitshammer fired off the fastest time of his career in 59.93 to make history.
Opening in 27.85 and closing in 32.08, Reitshammer’s final time of 59.93 not only took gold but it also qualified the Austrian for this summer’s Olympic Games. Reitshammer’s effort matches the FINA ‘A’ cut of 59.93 needed to qualify for Tokyo.
Entering this meet, Reitshammer’s personal best rested at the 1:02.84 he registered at this same meet 3 years ago. He knocked nearly 3 solid seconds off his lifetime quickest with this swim.
As such, with 26-year-old Reitshammer’s 59.93 effort here, the man now overtakes that Austrian standard, which stood at 1:00.27 Valentin Bayer logged last July.
Reitshammer’s time situates him just outside the list of top 25 performers in the world this season.
Throw a “Shrimp on the barbie” and celebrate!
Got the wrong country there mate.
Such versatile swimmer: There can’t be too many guys out there with a 59s 100br, 53s 100bk and 49s 100fr.
Wow no doubt. Really impressive. He should consider the IM, his butterfly can’t be all that bad.
He has a 1.59 to his name. I have zero doubts he could go faster.
Don’t forget the man is qualifyed for the olympic games for his 200 back and 200 medley! He is also a beast in 50br/100medley
How many countries in the world have a sub-minute breaststroker? Would be interesting to see a list

I think the Portuguese time is fake, or maybe logged as LC when it was actually SC
It seems I can’t load the FINA rankings, which is the only ranking I know of that goes past the top 25 or so all time, but from that and what I can remember: Russia, Japan, USA, Norway, France, Great Britain (incl. England and Scotland), South Africa, Italy, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary, Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Belarus, Turkey, Brazil, Colombia, Netherlands, Ireland, and Austria
