After a long course time trial session was held yesterday, where three swimmers hit new Olympic Trials qualifying times, the Sectionals meet in St. George, Utah kicked off on Thursday, April 22nd with three events, the 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly.

After earning an Olympic Trials Wave II cut in the 50 free on Wednesday, Chloe Larson swam to the fastest time in the 100 yard free on Thursday. The Washington State senior swam 49.03 in the 100 free, just off her best time of 48.74. Not far behind her was 16-year old Helena Jones of Lake Oswego Swim Club, who finished in 49.67. She now sits just outside of USA Swimming’s Top-100 all-time in the 15-16 age group.

On the men’s side, the 100 free also went to a swimmer fresh off a new Olympic Trials cut, Quintin McCarty. McCarty dipped below 44.0 for the first time in the event, touching in 43.67. McCarty, who was ranked among SwimSwam’s best of the rest for the class of 2022, is committed to swim for NC State.

The fastest time in the women’s 200 breast came from Kira Hobbs of Highlands Ranch Aquatic. The University of Hawaii commit touched in 2:18.29.

In the men’s 200 breast, it was 17-year old Max Cannon who came away with the fastest time. Cannon dropped below 2:00 for the first time in the event to win by over two seconds in 1:59.70. Second place in the event went to another 17-year old, Andrew Huang, in 2:01.91.

Winning the women’s 200 fly was Rylie Lopez of Bellingham Bay Swim. Lopez finished in 2:02.40. She was over two seconds off from her best time in the event, a 1:59.61.

Rounding out the first day’s finals session was Patrick Keough and Michael Hochwalt, both of which finished below 1:48.0 in the 200 fly. While Keough finished in the top time of 1:47.24, it was Hochwalt who finished with the more impressive time. Hochwalt, who is only 15, dropped over half a second in the event to take second in 1:47.80. With that swim he is now the second fastest 15-year old in the event this year.
