Purdue Men Slide Past WKU Hilltoppers

West LaFayette, IN, November 7, 2014 –  The Purdue University (PU) Boilermaker men ended up on top of a tight duel meet battle with the men of Western Kentucky University (WKU).  The balance of points went back and forth, but PU’s nine individual event wins helped them pull away the team win, 165 – 132.

Leading the meet off in WKU’s favor was the foursome of Seth Musser (senior), Fabian Schwingenschlogl (sophomore), Tyler Groneck (senior), and John Myhre (freshman), who put together a winning time of 1:30.87 in the 200 medley relay.  The Boilermakers answered right back, however, as junior Nathan Hopkins  topped the field in the very next event, the 1000 free, in a time of 9:26.03.

Purdue would go on to sweep the breaststroke events, with senior Lyan Dias winning the 100 breaststroke in an NCAA provisional cut of 54.88, and Marat Amaltdinov (freshman) winning the 200 breaststroke, also in an NCAA provisional cut of 1:59.20.

The backstroke and butterfly distances, however, were split between the teams with one win apiece.  Stephen Seliskar, junior at Purdue, earned the victory in the 100 backstroke distance with a time of 49.51, while Hilltopper senior Seth Musser topped the field in the 200 backstroke in 1:50.10.  Flip this order around for the butterfly events, where WKU earned the win in the 100 distance (Tyler Groneck, 48.80), while Purdue earned first in the 200 butterfly (Dan Conway, 1:49.78).  Groneck also won the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.36.

With Purdue sweeping the diving events, and wrapping up the meet with a win in the 400 free relay (Seliskar, Blanco, Stephens, Erhman combined for 3:04.52), the Boilermakers were able to claim overall team victory over the WKU Hilltoppers.

Next up, Purdue has a slight break until heading to the Minneapolis Grand Prix slated for November 20th-23rd.  The WKU men next head to the University of Louisville-hosted Louisville Invite on November 21st-23rd.
