Phelps Goes Sub-50 in 100m Free Final at NBAC Classic

As a follow-up swim to his prelims clocking of 50.80 in the 100m freestyle, Michael Phelps, went on to register a 49.66 in finals to ultimately win the event at Meadowbrook Aquatic Center. The swims went down at the NBAC Mid-Summer Classic, one of the 22-time Olympic medalist’s final tuneups before his target meet, the U.S. Summer National Championships.

Splits were not available at the time of publishing.

Whereas Phelps swam prelims indoors in a 6-lane pool, the final was moved outdoors and in a 10-laner, per the two videos provided by SwimSwam readers @grayson_gilbert (first portion of race) and @nate_wojo (latter part of race). Look for Phelps in lane 5, complete with arm flap.

Yes. You’re right.
But I’m not so much interested in his 100 free. Anyway he swims it just with the relay in mind.
I’m much more interested in his 100 fly/200 fly?/200 IM performances.

200IM : 1:55.7

All top10 world ranking times. Not bad for 30.

Not sure this is really news — not quite 100th in the world in 2015 so far. But in July in a slow pool and having fun it’s a step. I think what’s most impressive is that a guy with this much reputation, talent, etc. is willing to just go out and see where he is in public. That says a lot. And it’s good for the up and comers who might be frustrated not wining every meet as they train through with an eye on the meets that matter most to them. Go Phelps!

It is mid July & mid summer . Most Worlds & Olympics are in July . if. You are training so hard that you can’t get up for a fast 100 ( or other flashiness ) – then you will regret it later in life .

Sorry I cannot believe a grown man ,past his best summers , is hang dogged drop dead tired instead of tripping the light fantastic .

To the downtickers . Exactly why should not MP be enjoying some summer time when the livin is easy ? Why must he be in hard Training – for what – nationals? Nothing rests on nationals .

Sometimes I think sw fans are masochists – pain pain pain train train train – for others not themselves of course .

Btw when’s the wedding? Don’t knowthe Guy buti want him to be happy & not beaten up .30 is last ditch time- if you are not happy then , you never will be .

49.66 in that pool is at least a second faster in an Olympics/Trials modern technology quality pool.

Really? Not a chance. I recall Mie Nielsen swimming 59.6 for the first time in 2012 and everybody talking about how much faster she’d go in the London pool (as the pool she swam in was poor etc). Didn’t happen. He might well be 48mid later in the year, but not today.

There are no splits at the turn because it is an old school pool with concave concrete walls that you could not possibly hang a pad on at the shallow end.
