Penny Oleksiak Talks 200m Butterfly Canadian Record

Penny Oleksiak is on the rise to becoming one of the top butterfly and freestyle swimmers in Canada, breaking provincial and national age group records almost every time she dives in for a race.

Most recently, Oleksiak put forth some very strong performances at the Ontario Junior International meet held at her home pool, the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

At that meet, one race that stood out for Oleksiak was the 200m butterfly, an event that isn’t exactly her primary focus. Oleksiak is more known for her 50s and 100s in both freestyle and butterfly, but proved at the Ontario Junior International that she can move her talents over to the 200 realm as well.

Oleksiak dropped a very impressive 2:08.06 time in Toronto.

Oleksiak managed to put her name on the record books in the 200m butterfly as she downed the previous 15-17 age group record in the event.

Her time bettered the previous mark of 2:08.62 set by current senior Canadian record holder and Pan American Games gold medalist Katerine Savard. Savard set that mark in 2011.

This past weekend at the Ontario Provincial Championships, also in Toronto, Oleksiak finished second in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:11.11, falling just shy of her new age group mark.
