The 2022 FINA Aquatic World Championships officially got underway on June 18, 2022 with the Opening Ceremonies.
Budapest played host to Worlds five years ago in 2017, and now with this edition, they become the fourth city to host the championships twice. Perth, Barcelona, and Rome are the other three cities. With Kazan previously announced as the 2025 host, that number will soon grow. At the same time as FINA announced Kazan as the 2025 host, they also announced that Budapest will play host again in 2027. That announcement was made in 2019, well before Budapest stepped in at the last minute to host this year’s World Championship.
The Opening Ceremony took place at the Duna Arena prior to the start of Day 1 finals of pool swimming. It featured a DJ, a light show that included showing the flags of all the nations present at the championships, and trapeze artists.
The performance then moved into a musical performance complete with dancers, before taking a moment to honor the host nation of Hungary.
Sandor Wladar, the President of the Hungarian Swimming Association, addressed the crowd, as did Katalin Novak, the President of Hungary, and welcomed them to the start of the competition. The 19th edition of the FINA World Championships run from June 18 – July 3.
