BROOKINGS, S.D. – Omaha swimming & diving got back in the pool today with its first meet since October 14. The Maverick women came out on top with a 173.5-122.5 win, while the men took the Jackrabbits down to the wire and fell, 156.6-141.
It marked the first conference meet for the Mavericks this season.
“This was hands down our best meet of the season,” said interim head coach Jessica Hessel. “Our women did a great job staying in control of the meet from the start. Our men went on a hunt and came up a little short at the end. There’s always a way to get better, but we came in racing at another level. That has to be celebrated. If you don’t look at scores, it sure feels like both men and women walked out with a win. I’m really proud of the energy, competitiveness and team comradery that we had from start to finish.”
In the first event of the night, both the Omaha women and men broke the SDSU’s pool record. Gracie Streblow, Caroline Gardner, Annika Harthoorn, and Payton Easley swam a time of 1:45.84 in the 200-medley relay. Mason Schroeder, Amir Haviv, AJ Swibold, and Owen Hoak posted a time of 1:33.26.
Carina Monroe then took first in the 1000-free by more than two seconds. She swam a time of 10:53.80. Nick Walkley was the top finished for the men in second with a time of 10:14.48. Rylee Trojan, Luke Muse, and Alex Becker all earned top-five finishes in the event.
In the 200-free, the women took second-fourth. Parker Hagemann led the pack with a time of 1:57.98. Caleb Miller was the leader on the men’s side with a third-place finish and time of 1:45.75.
Streblow added an individual first-place performance to her plate with a 58.15 swim in the 100-back. Schroeder took second for the men with a time of 51.15.
Both the men and women took the top spot in the 100-breast. Annie Leinart took first with a time of 1:07.85, while Haviv swam a time of 57.27.
Hailey Matthews added her name to the mix with a time of 2:10.13 in the 200-fly for first place. Caden Murphy took second for the Maverick men with a time of 1:58.22.
In the 50- free, Easley, Rachel Shelstad, and Morgan Baker took top-five finishes, while the men captured first. Hoak posted a time of 21.45. Grant Waszak and Haviv also placed in the top-five.
Hagemann finished second in the 100-free with a time of 53.80. It marked her second second-place finish on the day. Grant Schaeffer used a time of 48.06 for third on the men’s side.
Matthews reigned supreme in the 200-back for her second first-place finish vs. SDSU. Matthews swam a time of 2:06.15. Schroeder also grabbed the top spot for the men with a time of 1:54.93.
Three of the top-five finishes in the women’s 200-breast belonged to the Mavericks. Leinart was first with a time of 2:26.13. Haviv and Chas Nolte earned first and second for the men with times of 2:10.64 and 2:12.72, respectively.
Kadence Jeffries took first in the 500-free by nearly three seconds. She swam a time of 5:18.45 for the top finish. Walkley was third for the men with a time of 4:56.98.
In the 100-fly Harthoorn and Swibold took first for Omaha. Harthoorn swam a time of 58.64, while Swibold finished in 51.96 seconds.
Olivia Dendinger added her name to the mix with a time of 2:14.00 in the 200-IM for first place. Murphy and Miller earned second and third for the men with times of 1:58.49 and 1:58.57, respectively.
The swim event wrapped up with the 400-free relays. Matthews, Easley, Streblow, and Hagemann placed first with a time of 3:33.09. Schaffer, Jace Walker, Hoak, and Waszak took second with a time of 3:07.80.
In the 1M-dive, Kady Eller posted a score of 212.10 for second place. Bella Price finished right behind her teammate in third with a score of 2:04.30. On the men’s side, Omaha took second-sixth place in the event. Ian Blackstock led the way with a score of 258.08 for second.
Eller and Price later grabbed second and third place in the 3M-dive. Eller posted a score of 204.75, while Price finished with a score of 165.83. On the men’s side, Blackstock finished second with a score of 240.45. Cort Chiodo was third with a score of 219.15.
“The divers showed up in Brookings ready to compete” said diving coach Eric Sprague. “We’re showing good progress and ready to perform as the semester comes to an end. We’ve been a little beat-up the last few weeks, and Kady, Bella and Holly really stepped up for the women today.”
The Maverick women will return to action on Friday, Nov. 18 with a meet at Nebraska. Then both teams return to the pool on Dec. 2-4 at the Rochester Invite.

In a meet that wasn’t decided until the final race of the afternoon, the South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team held off Omaha for 156.5-141.5 victory in Summit League action Friday at the Stanley J. Marshall Center Pool.
The Jackrabbits entered the closing 400-yard freestyle relay with a six-point lead over Omaha and needed to either win the event or claim both the second and third spots to record the dual victory. The two squads traded leads through the first three legs, but the Jackrabbits trailed by about a half-second when anchorman Eric Anderson hit the water. Anderson trimmed the deficit in his first 50 yards, and overtook his Maverick counterpart after the final turn to lead SDSU to the event and dual victory.
The quartet of Sam Johnson, Alex Kraft, Jon Galles and Anderson finished with a time of 3 minutes, 7.12 seconds as SDSU improved to 8-5 in head-to-head competition this season.
Anderson also posted an individual win in the 100 freestyle, clocking a time of 47.21 seconds, following a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.50 seconds.
SDSU won four of the five individual freestyle events, including a pair of wins by freshman and Omaha native Jack Ellison in the distance events. Ellison claimed the 1,000-yard race in 10:08.92 and came back later in the afternoon with a winning time of 4:51.98 in the 500.
Alex Kraft added a win in the 200 freestyle as the Jackrabbits took three of the top four spots in the event. Kraft touched the wall in 1:44.72, followed by freshman Jon Galles in second place, 1:45.21, and Sam Johnson in fourth place at 1:46.16. Kraft also was the 500 freestyle runner up with a time of 4:54.04.
Spencer Fritze also was a two-time winner for SDSU as the reigning Summit League Diver of the Week posted top scores of 287.10 on the 1-meter board and 291.00 in the 3-meter competition.
Austin Smith, along with freshmen Aiden Carstensen and Braxton McGrath, also were victorious for the Jackrabbits. Smith tied Omaha’s A.J. Swibold for the top time in the 100 butterfly as both swimmers hit the wall in 51.96 seconds.
Carstensen led SDSU in the backstroke, clocking a winning 100 time of 50.83 seconds and a runner-up mark of 1:55.20 in the 200-yard race.
McGrath swam his way to victory in the 200 butterfly, turning in a time of 1:57.51, and added a third-place time of 52.35 seconds in the 100 fly.
