The 2025 Mid-American Conference Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships kicked off last night in Buffalo. As always, the first night of the meet featured the 200 medley and 800 free relays. 3-time defending MAC champions Akron ended the night in the lead.

The biggest performance of the night, however, came from Ohio, who kicked the meet off by shattering the pool record in the 20 medley relay. Allie Schrank (25.29), Casadie DiBetta (26.91), Zita Szoke (23.01), and Caroline Dunigan (21.77) combined for a 1:36.98, shredding the pool record of 1:37.91, which Akron set back in 2020. Speaking of the Zips, they were right behind last night, taking 2nd in 1:37.13. Maddy Gatrall got them out to an excellent start with a 24.58 backstroke split, while Abby Daniel put up an elite breaststroke split of 22.84. Ohio’s swim also marks a new program record.

Other notable splits in the medley relay included Ball State junior Payton Kelly anchoring her relay in 21.75. Ball State’s Anna Keen, just a freshman, was 22.97 on the fly leg. Toledo’s Leah Evans, a sophomore, was 24.62 on the back leg., while Buffalo’s Mia Naccarella was 24.63.

Akron then went on the win the 800 free relay by 3 seconds, swimming a 7:10.41. Dominika Kossakowska (1:47.02), Helena Lalkovic (1:47.98), Rebecca Reid (1:47.65), and Maddy Gatrall (1:47.76) teamed up to get the job done. Buffalo’s Mia Naccarella got her team out to a great start, leading off in 1:46.67.
