NYS Distance Swimmer Matthew Styczen Verbals to UVA for 2021

NYS Aquatics’ Matthew Styczen has verbally committed to the University of Virginia. He’ll join their class of 2025 and get to campus in the fall of 2021.

Styczen is a versatile, distance-oriented nab for the Cavaliers. Right now, he’s best suited for the distance free and IM races.

At the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East, Styczen made the B-final in his best event, the 400 IM. There, he placed 11th overall with his lifetime best 3:52.75. The 400 IM was also the event in which he finished highest at the 2019 Speedo Junior National Championships, where he clocked a long course best time of 4:32.47 to touch 33rd overall.

Styczen will have two years of training overlap with standout mid-distance freshman Jack Walker. Virginia has had plenty of recent success in Styczen’s best events: now-graduated Brendan Casey is the defending ACC champion in the 400 IM and mile while UVA had two A-finalists at ACCs in the 500 free and mile and three in the 400 IM.

Styczen joins #18 Jack Aikins in the UVA class of 2025 on the men’s side.
