DENTON, Texas — North Texas Swim and Dive earned a 203.5-96.5 win in its first dual meet of the season Friday over Incarnate Word. The Mean Green improved their score in 13 of the 15 events they had competed in already this season.
Freshman Laura Mazzotta highlighted the evening with four wins in four events. She outpaced the competition in both the 100 Breaststroke and the 200 Breaststroke by nearly a second and earned tough finishes in the 200 IM and 400 Free Relay. Head coach Brittany Roth said several freshmen caught her eye.
“Laura Mazzotta showed a lot of grit and heart in her event lineup, racing to a tight finish in her 200 IM and then turning around and anchoring our 400 Free Relay,” Roth said. “Lexie Green put up an impressive 1000 free, and then turned around and performed a really strong 200 Fly showing her strength and range. Shaena McCloud had a really impressive night, putting together key performances, and showcased some top end speed.”
Green finished second in the 1000 Free with only six events before her 200 Butterfly exhibition which also would have earned a second place finish. McCloud had three wins and a second place at the end of the night.
“Tonight was an effort our entire team can be proud of, and it’s encouraging to see the team continue to build their strength and confidence in themselves and with one another,” Roth said.
On the diving side, junior Saylor Hawkins continued her stretch of dominance with wins on the 1-Meter and 3-Meter boards. Junior Altaira Wallquist posted a personal best on each apparatus, while also zone qualifying on the 1-Meter.
