Noe Ponti Fires Off 48.40 European Record For 100 Fly Gold At World Cup Shanghai

2024 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP-SHANGHAI

We entered day one of the first stop of the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Shanghai, China and Swiss ace Noe Ponti wasted no time making his presence known.

Racing in the final of the men’s 200m fly, 23-year-old Ponti fired off a new lifetime best and European Record of 48.40 to get to the wall first and grab the gold.

Dutchman Nyls Korstanje registered a new Dutch national record of 49.24 as tonight’s silver medalist while South Africa’s Chad Le Clos landed on the podium in 49.72 for bronze.

Entering this competition, the European Record stood at the 48.47 Ponti put on the books en route to becoming European champion at the 2023 European Short Course Swimming Championships.

Comparing his splits, Ponti attacked the back half slightly more aggressively this time around to make up the .07 speed difference.

Ponti’s 48.40 European Record keeps the Olympic medalist ranked as the 3rd-fastest man in history in this 100m fly event.

For Korstanje’s part, the former NC State standout’s 49.24 sliced .25 off his own previous Dutch record of 49.49 logged in 2022.

Le Clos’ bronze adds to his overall World Cup medal haul, bringing his total to an astonishing 226.
