New Mexico State Bests Idaho in Home Dual Meet

In a dual meet in Las Cruces on Tuesday night, the Idaho Vandals fell 181-119 to New Mexico State. New Mexico State honored Georgia Brown, Cassandra Rupp, Dory Lennert, Lauren Wood, Natalie French, Lauren Reifel and MacKinna for senior day as the team swam to their first victory of 2016.

Idaho:

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sarah Mabee-Hall won the 200 and 500 free, while Aileen Pannecoucke captured the 100 free and Cara Jernigan won the 100 breaststroke as the Idaho Vandals opened the new year with a 181-119 loss to New Mexico State.

“Well we haven’t competed in six weeks and it showed in the first half of the meet,” coach Mark Sowa said. “We just had two great weeks of training that finished with a very fast intersquad meet. I think we expected that to carry over rather than needing to recreate that intensity.

“We’re a young team and we paid the price for that mistake. The positive side is that we were much better in the second half but it was too little too late. We will learn from this, get better, and be much sharper against a very good Oregon State team. ”

Mabee-Hall won the 200 in 1 minute, 56.33 seconds, while she was clocked in 5:14.89 in the 500. Jernigan won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.99 with Pappencoucke winning the 50 free in 54.29.

Runner-up finishes went to Vivian Crowe in the 200 fly (2:10.49), Sami Hendricks in the 50 free (25.22), Erica King in the 200 back (2:11.48), Emily Bruneel in the 500 free (5:20.83) and Jernigan in the 200 breast (2:22.31). Emily Kliewer was second in both the 100 fly (58.46) and 200 IM (2:12.19).

The Vandals’ home finale is Jan. 23 when they take on Oregon State for Senior Day. The meet at the UI Swim Center begins at 11 a.m.

New Mexico State:

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State swimming and diving beat Idaho handily on Senior Day, winning 12 of 16 events and by a score of 181.00-119.00.

“Today was a great win for our team, and a fun way to celebrate our seniors,” said head coach Rick Pratt. “We battled some illness and injuries today, but everyone really stepped up to beat a strong Idaho team. Our seniors were especially inspiring and really carried our group. All seven of them had great performances, and I am very proud of our efforts today.
