NCSA Junior National Champ Hanna Huston Commits to Rice

The Rice Owls women’s swimming program has gotten a verbal commitment from one of the school’s best recruits ever this week. The team got a pledge from local Houston product Hanna Huston, who was the 2014 NCSA Junior National Champion in the 800 meter freestyle.

Huston is the daughter of Rice women’s head coach Seth Huston, but trains at Katy Aquatics in the city’s western suburbs.

Huston is primarily a distance freestyler, with a solid 200 fly and 400 IM to go with it. Her best times in yards are:

  • 100 free – 52.42
  • 200 free – 1:50.35
  • 500 free – 4:51.53
  • 1650 free – 16:28.09
  • 100 fly – 57.12
  • 200 fly – 2:02.78
  • 200 IM – 2:04.18
  • 400 IM – 4:22.35

Those times should put Huston in the top 8 in whichever individual events she ends up racing at her first Conference USA Championship meet, and will immediately be among the favorites in the mile. She’ll take over that torch for Rice from current senior Erin Flanigan: the two-time defending Conference USA Champion in the 1650 free.
