DURHAM, N.C. — Swimming in the first of three consecutive weekends of competition, NC State’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams began the season’s ACC competition with wins over Duke in the Saturday dual.
The fourth-ranked Wolfpack women ended Duke’s 4-0 winning streak with a 168-130 win over the Blue Devils, while the fifth-ranked NC State men overcame unranked Duke to win 199-96.
NC State swept the podium in ten events, putting up the top time in all but six of the 32 events contested. Five members of the squad picked up wins in both of their individual events, respectively.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Junior Abby Arens posted two wins during the session, picking up the top time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.67) and 100-yard freestyle (49.90). Her finish in the freestyle event led a 1-2-3-4 sweep for the Wolfpack women. Graduate student Kylee Alons joined Arens with her own two wins in the 50-yard freestyle (22.90) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.62).
During the first season of her collegiate career, freshman Kennedy Noble put together two winning times, leading two 1-2-3 sweeps for the squad. In the 100-yard backstroke, her time of 52.96 seconds led the trio of the Pack in the top three, with Emma Muzzy (55.79) and Maddy Flickinger (55.79) finishing second and third. Noble’s second win occurred just a handful of events later in the 200-yard backstroke (1:56.35), where she once again led the women of NC State to a 1-2-3 finish with Muzzy (1:59.35) and Hefner (1:59.50) right behind.
On the men’s side, graduate student Giovanni Izzo and junior Michael Moore led the way for the Pack. Both men put together top finishes in their individual events with Izzo winning the 100-yard backstroke (48.46) and 100-yard butterfly (47.79) and Moore claiming the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.15) and 200-yard backstroke (1:47.65). Both of Izzo’s swims led the Pack to sweep the podium.
NC State secured 1-2-3 finishes in ten total events, with the additional sweeps occurring in the men’s 1000-yard freestyle, men’s 100-yard breaststroke, men’s 100-yard freestyle, and the men’s 400-yard individual medley (exhibition).
RELAYS:
Kennedy Noble (24.98), Heather MacCausland (27.55), Kylee Alons (23.69) and Abby Arens (22.33) kicked off the Wolfpack winning streak with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.55), beating second-place Duke by a second and a half.
For the men, Giovanni Izzo (22.13), Mason Hunter (24.62), Nyls Korstanje (20.53), and Noah Henderson (19.22) set the tone for the rest of the session by winning the medley relay event by over two full seconds (1:26.50).
NC State opted to compete in the 400-freestyle relay as exhibition swims, though both the A and B relays for the women and men finished ahead of Duke’s fastest relays on each side. The women’s A relay (3:21.69) consisted of Cassie Moses, Kylee Alons, Sarah Watson, and Katherine Helms, while the men were led by Noah Henderson, Nyls Korstanje, Bartosz Piszczorowicz, and Austin Winchester (2:56.48).
DIVING:
NC State’s divers picked up a couple of wins and had several top-three finishes on the baords.
Senior Helene Synnott secured second place finishes on both the 1-meter (292.95) and 3-meter (303.98) boards, with freshman Ren Watt following closely behind on the 3-meter in 3rd place (283.50).
On the men’s side, Bayne Bennett and Renato Calderaro added wins for the Pack. Bennett’s 336.38 points on the 1-meter and Calderaro’s 350.70 points on the 3-meter
UP NEXT:
The Wolfpack’s ACC competition resumes next weekend (Jan. 20-21) as it faces North Carolina and Virginia in Chapel Hill Friday, and then is set to host both teams in Raleigh on Saturday morning to resume the tri-meet competition.

DURHAM – Duke swimming and diving began the new year hosting No. 5/4 NC State at the Taishoff Aquatic Center for senior day. The Wolfpack men defeated the Blue Devils (2-3), 199-96, while the No. 22 Blue Devils (4-1) fell for the first time this season, 168-130.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 200-breaststroke, Sarah Foley (2:13.95), Catherine Belyakov (2:15.35) and Kaelyn Gridley (2:15.37) swept the podium against the No. 4 ranked team in the country.
- On the men’s side, graduate student Cole Reznick clocked a time of 2:02.31 to take first place in the 200-breaststroke.
- Foley improved on her NCAA B-cut time in the 100-breaststroke, finishing second in the event and swimming a time of 1:01.89.
- Duke secured two silver medal finishes in the 200-yard medley relay as the women’s team produced a time of 1:40.03, while the men posted a time of 1:28.85.
- Sophomore swimmer Michael Jiang swam the fastest time this season for a Blue Devils swimmer in the 400-IM, taking home first place with a time of 4:01.69… The time was 12 full seconds faster than teammate Nick Viers, as Duke swept the podium.
- The Blue Devils continued to swim fast times in the 400-freestyle, as both the men’s and women’s squad swept the podium… The women clocked a time of 3:24.96, while the men posted a time of 3:01.47.
