Day One

The four-day Patriot League Championship meet got off to a fast start with records falling in 3 of the 4 relays. The Navy women started off by breaking the pool record in the 200 medley relay. Anna Brooks (25.33), Hanna Gillcrist (28.42), Rheanna Vaughn (24.90) and Olivia Morrell (23.23) combined for a winning 1:41.88. Army nearly got them, though, with a huge 22.5 freestyle leg from Molly Mucciarone, but Navy held on, breaking the pool record of 1:42.18 from 2012. Army’s quartet of Kelly Hamilton, Jessica Burkett, Ariana Bullard and Mucciarone also finished under the Lejeune Hall pool record with their second-place finish of 1:42.14. Bucknell took third.

The Navy men’s 200 medley relay went one step further by breaking the pool, meet, and Patriot League records. Brendan Walsh (21.71), Sean Murphy (23.78), Jonathan Debaugh (21.48), and Dain Bomberger (19.28) touched in 1:26.25, earning a NCAA “B” time standard. The previous pool and Patriot League record was 1:27.37 from December 2013; the meet record of 1:28.60 dated from 2012. Army (Samuel Mo, Dion Hart, Michael Dustin, and Christopher Szekely) finished second with 1:27.90, also under the previous meet record.

Boston University picked up important points in the women’s three-meter diving. Chelsea Glincman topped the field with 269.15 points, while teammate Kalli Roebelen took fourth. Bucknell’s Tara Boyle was second; Julie Jesse of Navy finished third.

The women’s 800 free relay was the most exciting contest of the evening. Four teams swam neck-to-neck for 600 yards: Colgate, Lehigh, Navy, and Boston U turned very nearly together at the 400, then Colgate and Lehigh began to pull away. But a 1:48-low achor leg from Maddie Thompson of Navy proved too difficult to match, and the Mids wound up with the meet and league record with 7:20.05 (beating 7:20.29 from 2011). Navy’s splits were Kenzie Margroum (1:50.62), Jessi Ford (1:49.97), Charlotte Meyer (1:51.14) and Thompson (1:48.32). Boston University placed second (7:21.82); Lehigh was third (7:22.42), dropping 26 seconds from their seed time.

The Navy men won their relay soundly, taking the league, pool, and meet record in the process. Thomas Duvall (1:36.49), Riley Mita (1:36.96), Alex Nickell (1:37.97), and Hugh Davison (1:37.20) combined for 6:28.62. Boston U was second in 6:31.96 and Army touched third with 6:37.18. The old meet and League record was 6:31.95 (2011); the Lejeune Hall record had been 6:33.61 (2012).
