Men’s 100 freestyle at the 2013 World Championship Trials as reported by swimswam:
An exciting 100 freestyle final was won by Olympic champion Nathan Adrian in a time of 48.10, a season’s best time by seven one-hundredths of a second. The time ranks third in the world behind James Magnussen (47.53) and Vlad Morozov (47.93).

It was no surprise that Anthony Ervin led the way in the first 50 turning in a time of 22.38, he was followed by Adrian who split a 22.73.
Jimmy Feigen had the fastest final 50 in the field, splitting a 25.12 which propelled him to a second place finish out of lane two, posting a time of 48.24. Ervin fell back to third finishing in a time of 48.49 followed by Ryan Lochte who finished fourth in a time of 48.58.
He’ll get back close to his Olympic winning time at the World Championships. His last 5 meters always looks so good when he fully extends his stroke into a pure high-hands style. I wonder why he doesn’t do that long stroke the entire race?
Haha, have you tried doing that fully extended freestyle before? It’s one of Mike Bottom’s trademark “three styles of freestyle”… the body-driven stroke. Full body swimming is unsustainable for more than about 20 meters… MAYBE. Usually only about 10. Yes it’s powerful but its because you put everything you’ve got into it.
Well I wish I had know about this fully body-driven stroke finish when I was swimming. I may have been a contender with it, LOL>
Men’s 100 free final, look at the reaction times for the top 6 spots. Top 3 are where they should be. Then Lochte at .82, Berens at 1.11 (WTF???), and Grevers at .90. If those guys had the starts they should have had, that is an extremely tight field! Berens should have been a 48.2, Lochte a 48.3 or 48.4.
Tony I noticed the EXACT same thing.
Was messaging a former coach of mine about that when I looked at the reaction time.
The only thing I can really say is that while you want to have a good reaction time, it’s more important where you are breaking out of the water. I’ll have to go back and re-watch the race, but both Lochte, Greavers, and Berens are dolphin kickers (Greaver to an extent) so I’m curious where they were at the 15 meter mark and at the break out. Either way, Berens could’ve been faster for sure. I think Lochte’s reaction time is usually under .7 too.
Obviously the timing system was off with the reaction times, nobody takes over a second to get off of the block. And in the 50 fly today Grevers was at .69 and Lochte and Berens were at .68 and .72 in prelims yesterday
