SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Lindenwood in the season opener here Friday, with the women’s team handling the Lions, 164-77, and the men’s team winning a close contest, 128-115.

“Before the meet, we talked about two things,” head coach Dave Collins said. “We talked about energy. If you can’t get excited to start a season, you’ve got problems. And we wanted to have great effort. We knew that we’re at the very beginning stages of the season, and things would not go perfectly. We’ve got plenty of things that we can improve upon.

The dual began with the men’s and women’s 200 yard medley relay, with MoState picking up first (1:43.21) and third (1:48.50) place finishes on the women’s side and second (1:32.85) and third (1:34.55) place finishes on the men’s side.

In the 1000 yard freestyle, Vera Margula (10:37.72) took first place, Lauren Chaney (10:37.77) took second and Samantha Hietpas (10:57.33) finished in sixth on the women’s side. The men’s side featured Dylan Moffatt taking first place (9:42.52), Aiden Dunn grabbing third (9:47.32) and Jonathan Hill finishing fifth (10:04.51).

MSU took the top three places on the women’s side in the 200 yard freestyle, with Anna Lucas (1:53.08), Lily DeSpain (1:56.34) and Ainsley Jenkins (1:57.59) rounding out the top three. The women’s team held a commanding 42-13 lead at this point in the meet. On the men’s side, Pawel Krawczyk finished first (1:41:44), and Brunno Suzuki (1:41:47) took home second to help the men’s team build a 33-22 lead over the Lions.

The victory in the 200 yard freestyle was Lucas’ first ever collegiate event win.

“I’ve come a long way since my freshman year,” Lucas said.  “I feel like that really just solidified all the work I put in.”

“I think it sets up my season great,” she added. “I can work to build off of that now.”

Missouri State finished with both top two places secured in the 50 yard freestyle, when Ulyana Zubina (24.01) and Yuliya Zubina (24.09) finished first and second respectively. On the men’s side, Lucas Chadwell finished second (21.13), Reese Hodgins finished third (21.50) and Brunno Guerra finished fourth (21.53).

In the 200 yard individual medley, the women’s team enjoyed another sweep of the top three. Sami Roemer (2:06.40) finished first, Mai Ortega Bonilla (2:07.89) finished second and Kelly Sego (2:08.62) finished third. The men’s side had one top three finish, when Robbie Hill (1:56.46) came in second. The women’s team was off to the races with a 72-20 lead over Lindenwood, while the men’s team held the narrow advantage, 47-46.

“I’m just looking forward to having fun and not putting the pressure on, and enjoying the last couple years with my team, and just remembering what we’re here for,” Roemer said.

In diving, Courtney Stanbury recorded two third places finishes in one meter diving (222.00) and three meter diving (222.15). The one meter diving event for the men’s team featured third, fourth and fifth place scores by Cole Hysong (255.00), Logan Schelfaut (253.92) and Storm Opdahl (252.53). The men’s team also registered second, third and fourth place finishes in the three meter diving event, with Opdahl (290.47), Hysong (261.98) and Schelfaut (253.80) accounting for 15 total meet points. On the women’s side, Stanbury recorded six points for the Bears.

For a third time, the women’s team took all three top places, with Samantha Roemer (54.95) taking first, Ortega Bonilla (56.76) coming in second and Payton Smith (57.10) snagging third in the 100 yard butterfly. Krawczyk (51.31) finished in second on the men’s side.

“We had a couple of athletes that were extremely committed throughout the summer, and those athletes really shined today, especially on the women’s side with Sami and Anna,” Collins said. “Over the summer, they really changed their trajectory of what I think their seasons are going to look like, which is really exciting.”

The women’s team had two first place finishers in the 100 yard freestyle, with Lucas (52.25) and Jordan Wenner (52.51) taking first and second. While Suzuki (46.80) and Hodgins (46.99) finished first and third respectively, the Lindenwood men’s team led after the event, 77-73.

“I can improve on things,” Suzuki said. “But at the same time, we need to know that it’s really important to do a good job here.”

The 100 yard backstroke featured a second place finish by Sego (58.45), a third place finish by Sira Limbu (59.97) and a fourth place finish by Anika Lam (1:01.14) for the women’s team. The men’s lead retook the lead over Lindenwood, 85-84, after a first place finish by Robbie Hill (50.84) and a third place finish by Alex Boutin (52.29).

In the 500 yard freestyle, DeSpain took first place (5:09.47), Margula snagged third (5:14.89) and Chaney came in fourth (5:15.24) to extend the women’s team’s lead to 130-57 over the Lions. The men’s earned crucial first and second place finishes, with Moffatt grabbing first (4:40.82) and Krawczyk coming in second (4:42.19) to give the men’s team some breathing room with a 99-89 lead.

“Collectively, we’ve got a great group,” Moffatt said. “We got 11 freshmen this year, which is amazing. They bring the high energy and are super positive about all the practice meets. I love seeing them race for the first time.”

The 100 yard breaststroke saw a fourth and final sweep of the top three by the women’s team, with Yuliva Zubina (1:03.77), Puleo (1:04.96) and Cabrini Johnson (1:05.85) rounding out the top three. Key second, third and fourth place times by Nicholas Schuster (57.65), Brayden Goeldner (58.76) and Jack Grandy (59.06) help the men’s team maintain a 117-119 lead over Lindenwood heading into the final swimming event.

To round out the swimming, the Missouri State women’s team recorded first (3:30.96) and second (3:37.78) times in the 400 yard freestyle relay, while the men’s team put away the Lions with a crucial first place finish (3:05.50) in the event to clinch the team’s victory.
