University of Michigan commit Jaeddan Gamilla led his new Hinsdale Swim Club to team victory at the 2023 Illinois Senior SCY Championships last month in Westmont.

Combined Team Scores

  1. Hinsdale Swim Club – 1,374.5
  2. FMC Aquatic – 732
  3. Academy Bullets Swim Club – 682
  4. Chicago Wolfpack Aquatic Club – 600.5
  5. Patriot Aquatic Club – 534.5

Gamilla, a 17-year-old former member of Maverick Swim Club, picked up a win in the 200 (1:48.95) along with three runner-up finishes in the 100 breast (55.22), 100 fly (49.19), and 200 breast (2:00.93). The Meet High Point Award winner was slightly off his best times in the 100 breast and 200 breast, but he dropped over half a second in the 100 fly. Gamilla also tallied personal bests in the 100 back (50.15) and 200 back (1:52.35).

The 100 breast featured a stacked field, with surprise contender Nojus Bertulis coming out on top with a 54.86. The FMC Aquatic 17-year-old shaved nearly two full seconds off his lifetime best from last November (56.60), now ranking 36th in the nation this season for his age, to edge Gamilla by a few tenths. Bertulis added personal bests in the 50 free (21.62) and 200 breast (2:04.07).

The 100 breast battle also involved a pair of UPenn commits, 16-year-old Jeffrey Hou (55.29) and 17-year-old Colin Zhang (55.69), who placed third and fourth, respectively. Both wound up atop the podium in other events, though.

Hou triumphed in the 100 fly with a 48.20, nearly a second slower than his personal-best 47.46 from February, which put him less than a tenth of a second away from Alec Filipovic’s 15-16 LSC record of 47.37 from 2020. Hou clocked a 22.60 in the 50 fly, but two weeks later at the NCSA Spring Championships, the FMC Aquatic standout took down the 15-16 LSC record with a 21.89.

Zhang, who swims for Glenbrook Swim Club, clocked a 1:58.61 to win the 200 breast, about a second slower than his personal-best 1:57.33 from last November.

FMC Aquatic 16-year-old Brady Johnson reached the wall first in the 100 back with a 49.14, nearly a second slower than his own LSC record of 48.27 from last year. He clocked his first sub-1:50 time in the 200 IM with a 1:49.71 in prelims while adding another personal best in the 100 free (45.65). Two weeks later at NCSAs, Johnson set two more LSC records in the 50 back (22.47) and 50 breast (24.68).

On the girls’ side, 15-year-old Vera Conic put up an impressive performance with a 200 back title in 1:57.47 on top of runner-up finishes in the 400 IM (4:25.79) and 100 back (54.76). In the 200 back, she was eight-tenths off her best time (1:56.67), which is about a second and a half shy of Grace Ariola’s 15-16 LSC record (1:55.03) from 2015.

McGuire Aquatics Club 17-year-old Gracie Colvin came away with two new lifetime bests in the 50 back (25.60) and 100 back (53.94), both of which were prelims swims. The Arkansas commit is now about two seconds away from the 17-18 LSC record in the 100 back (51.61) and a little over a second behind the 50 back mark (24.34).

Patriot Aquatic Club 17-year-old Annika Parkhe dipped under 23 seconds for the first time during her 100 free victory in 22.79, a .27-second drop from December of 2021. She also notched a new personal best in the 50 free with her second-place showing in 22.79 while adding runner-up finishes in the 200 fly (1:59.31) and 500 free (4:52.13).
