The 2015 Missouri Valley Long Course Championships are underway in Lawrence, Kansas, which means local swim powerhouse Michael Andrew is in the pool ready for action.
Andrew was entered in just one event at the meet, the men’s 100m butterfly, but the 16-year old certainly made the most of it.  Scoring a 53.93 in prelims to snag the top seed-time, Andrew dipped under the 54-threshold for the first time as a 16-year old, having already accomplished the feat five times at age 15.
Andrew’s best time coming into this championships was the 53.46 he registered at last year’s Summer Junior Nationals. Tonight, however, he took it up yet another gear, clocking a sub-53 mark for the first time in his young career.  Andrew touched the wall in 52.82 tonight to nab top prize, but also to destroy his previous best by over six tenths.  His 52.82 mark inches Andrew to now sit just seven hundredths of a second off of the men’s 15-16 National Age Group (NAG) record of 52.75, held by Justin Lynch since 2013.
Additional winners in tonight’s session at the 2015 Missouri Valley LC Championships include Bryce Hinde in the women’s 100m breaststroke (1:14.43), Hannah Angell in the women’s 100m butterfly (1:04.63) and Aidan Holbrook in the men’s 200m freestyle (1:59.90).

That’s pretty fast but what can he go in an 800 free?
800m Free? In the words of John McEnroe……..”You can not be serious!”
My money is on MA for Olympic gold one day. He’s just too talented in all the strokes and he is doing the smartest training on the planet. One day people will look back and say, USRPT was the best way to train swimmers.
Based on his parents he could be 6’8″ or taller at full growth and keep in mind, this kid has never lifted weights!(I believe)
With all four strokes so strong, I would love to see him do the IMs!
Congrats Team Indy! Keep up the great job! I’m cheering for you!
USRPT doesn’t involve weight training from what I know.
Let’s also give some props to his Dad coach Peter Andrew. We have all seen Michael’s technique continue to improve. Way to go Team Indie.
Anyone know if they are seriously pursuing South African team for 2016? That was the talk for a while.
I wonder when he will start zeroing in on his Olympic schedule. Seems like he has been doing fewer 200m races, and virtually no 400 IM (an event his dad teased as a possibility). Maybe 100 of each stroke and 200 IM?
Longterm, I think 100 fly may be his best event as he gets more upper body strength. But in 2016, that will be a steep climb. Breaststroke or 4×100 FR is the likeliest path.
Well in theory the 200IM should be his best event. He has no weak stroke. Once he figures out how to get the most out of each leg and pace it he can do great things in this race.
1 problem. I mean 2 problems. 2 guys named Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte do the event, and you cannot forget Tyler Clary or David Nolan if he has a long course season that correlates with his short course times.
Andrew is only 16. By Tokyo he could be leaving them in his wake if they haven’t retired by then. There is great competition in this event but I hope he continues to race and train the IM in the near term as it can only help him.
The boy is real…..
This weekend’s meet is his 3rd meet in 3 weeks.
Ok guys.
MA will probably finish the season around 1.00.50 on breast, 52.50 on fly, between 54.50 and 55.00 on back and between 49.75 and 50.25 on free.
On paper, everything is ready to see a great 200 IM now!
Something around 1.58/1.59. This summer!
Only a problem of endurance can prevent him from doing that. We know he struggles to finish his 200-meter races so far.
Hopefully it can change in the next month.
Andrew time in 100fly was great!Last Junior Worlds, the winning time was 53.01!
I agree he has probably a stupid 200IM on him.
Just come up with those numbers out of nowhere?
