Max Litchfield in 10-Day COVID Isolation in Abu Dhabi; Documents on TikTok

2021 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

British swimmer Max Litchfield has tested positive for COVID-19 and is being required to quarantine for 10 days in Abu Dhabi before returning home after Christmas.

He is one of a growing list of British swimmers who have tested positive for COVID-19. It appears that only Molly Renshaw remains in the competition among an announced roster of 13 athletes. She finished 5th in the women’s 100 breaststroke on Monday evening.

Litchfield finished 8th in the 400 free in 3:39.45, which was his best time since 2018. He also placed 12th on day 1 in the 200 IM in 1:54.81, which missed qualifying for the final.

The UK has become a hotspot for COVID-19, especially the new more-easily transmissible Omicron variant. The country’s current 7-day average of more than 77,000 cases per day is the highest of the entire pandemic. That comes to about 115 cases/100,000 population per day.

Litchfield has made the most of his isolation, though, and has begun documenting himself “slowly going insane” in his hotel room.

He was also scheduled to race the 400 IM and 200 backstroke at the meet.

Great Britain’s mass withdrawal continues to raise new questions about why athletes from Nigeria, who did not meet posted guidelines for “close contacts,” were forced to withdraw from the meet.
