American swimmer Matt Grevers took Team USA’s first medal on the men’s side of the pool at the swimming portion of these World Championships, taking a bronze in the 100 meter backstroke.
Despite the win, Grevers didn’t have much good to say about his swim in his immediate post-race analysis. Showing obvious frustration with the result (he’s the defending World and Olympic Champion in long course), Grevers criticized his start, his turn, and his breakouts, and repeatedly said that he was disappointed.
At one point, Grevers even went so far as to say “I feel like I should’ve won,”though he ultimately finished .26 seconds behind Australian Mitch Larkin, and .18 behind Frenchman Camille Lacourt.
Grevers has raced two events thus far at the World Championships: the 100 back, and the 400 free relay that failed to final on Sunday. He still has swims in the 50 back, presumably the 400 medley relay, and perhaps a mixed relay left at the meet. Regardless of what happens in those races, this is still a better performance than he had in the year prior to the 2012 Olympic Games, where he failed to even make the World Championships team. He still went on, as mentioned above, to win Olympic gold the following year in the 100 backstroke individually and the 400 medley relay.

Whatever his training was whatever he has done to prepare, obviously lead him to believe that he should have one. I’ve noticed with many elite athletes that’s then give respect and congratulate others when those others beat that athlete at their best, or if that athlete did everything right and still lost. It seems to be indicated that Grevers wasn’t at his best and believes that no one can beat him at his best. Do not mistake confidence for lack of respect
No you are wrong . I would have overlooked it because not many ppl take any notice of 3rd place getters . However You demanded Bad Anon show respect to Grevers .
I don’t care what he thought his training was ,he did not win . I think perhaps one could say – I was confident of doing X time but he is not to know somebody can’t blast out of the woodwork like he did in 2012 .
It is not the biggest thing in the world . Ask Cecil.
He isn’t being disrespectful to other athletes he’s only suggesting his performance, based on what he believes he can achieve, was lackluster. He never a says anything negative or demeaning to another athlete, only of his personal swim not shaping up as anticipated. And just because you “don’t care what he thought his training was” doesn’t mean he does not. He cares immensely. And based on that he had a certain optimism that was undone by a bad swim, doesn’t mean he isn’t capable of being the world champ.
BAD ANON
And if he wouldve been in too hear he would have one. Lots of shoulda coulda woulda. Grevers has been there time and time again for this team. As a reminder, Grevers did not make the 2011 worlds team and performed below his standard only to come out and absolutely own the 100 back and the 2012 olympics, never count out the gentle giant and show some respect.
‘I feel like I should have won ‘ is not a well disciplined statement or one that shows respect to Larkin & LaCourt .
We are seeing a change of the guard. Mitch Larkin is young and improving, whilst Greevers is older and closer to the end of his career. Repeating patterns of behaviour from 2011/12 in 2015/16 is a bit of a stretch when you are over 30. Making this point is not disrespectful, it’s just logical. Full respect goes out to the new kids on the block that are taking the sport forward.
RYAN MURPHY!!!
Should’ve, would’ve, could’ve.
Next.
he should be thankful he medalled. If Irie had been in top gear he could have been locked out.
How come your videos are not available for Australian viewers??
Canadians either
A little disappointment before a big year is perfectly fine. It’ll drive him to be faster in Rio. Come on Grevers! Keep the American 100 back Olympic streak alive!
