Angelo Javier (“AJ”) Navaleza, a senior at Damascus High School in Damascus, Maryland, has committed to the University of Maryland Baltimore County for 2021-22 and beyond.

Navaleza won the 100 breast (57.19) in 2020 at the Maryland MPSSAA 3A2A1A State Swimming and Diving Championships. He also swam on all three Damacus relays, helping the Hornets achieve a second-place team finish.
More recently, swimming for the club team Rockville Montgomery Swim Club, he improved his 50/200 free and 100 fly LCM times at the Speedo Spring Splash and the Maryland Long Course State Championships. In SCY, he notched PBs in the 100 free and 200 IM at the NCSA Spring Swimming Championships and in the 200 free earlier this spring. In December 2020, he clocked best times in his best events, the 100/200 breast, at the Potomac Valley 18&U Championships, placing 13th and 12th, respectively.
JJ Chapman, Oliver Gassmann, Tull Perkins, and Yassin Tolba have also committed to the Retrievers for 2021-22. Navaleza will join 2020-21 freshmen Daniel Nicusan (54.91/ 1:59.92) and Maxwell Trias (57.23/2:03.82) and sophomore Zach Deal (56.77/2:06.76) on the UMBC roster next fall. Nicusan won the 200 breast and was runner-up in the 100 breast at the 2021 America East Conference Championships.
